Sacre Bleu by Christopher Moore

Sacre Bleu by Christopher Moore

Christopher Moore’s most recent novel is about blue. Vincent van Gogh went mad before shooting himself in a cornfield, or did he? In the time before he died, he was raving about a twisted little colorman, and had become terribly afraid of a certain shade of blue. But he was at the height of his painting career, so why would he walk into a cornfield to shoot himself, and then stumble over a mile away to a doctor’s house? His friends are on a mission to figure it out. Lucien Lessard, a baker who desperately wants to be a successful painter, and his friend and fellow painter Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, try to discover the mystery surrounding the tale of the twisted little Colorman and that beautiful, rare blue.

First let me say that Sacre Bleu is a beautiful book. The hardcover is gorgeous, with nice thick pages and a dark blue font. There are a ton of full-color pictures of famous paintings scattered throughout. Also, there is an online chapter guide that features even more paintings, as well as notes from Christopher Moore about different paintings, inspirations, etc. I really hope that the online chapter guide comes out as a companion book, because I would absolutely buy it.

The story itself of Sacre Bleu is so different from what I’m used to seeing from Christopher Moore. There was a bit of mystery too it, but it was a lot about the art too. I learned more about art / paintings / Impressionists than I really ever thought that I would. I was definitely intrigued by the little Colorman and his weird blue sidekick. I liked Lucien, but my favorite character was Henri - he was weird and ridiculous, but also had a sweet side to him. (Plus, he is mentioned in Outlander when Claire meets a man with Toulouse-Lautrec syndrome, though she can’t call it that because Henri Toulouse-Lautrec hadn’t been born yet.) There was kind of a big cast, but Henri really stole the show.

So, I can’t go too much into the details of the book because I don’t want to be spoiler-y. I can say that this isn’t my favorite Christopher Moore novel. It seemed more… serious. Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of bawdy humor in it, but for the most part that’s what it was – bawdy sexual humor with a little bit of genuinely weird humor sprinkled in. None of it ever actually made me laugh out loud, which is rare for a Moore novel. However, part of this is just because of the subject matter – a lot of the characters and events are based on real people and things that really happened, so it doesn’t have that element of total Moore wackyness that I’m so used to.

Even though Sacre Bleu wasn’t my favorite and wasn’t the usual hilarious read that I like, I feel like this will stick with me in a way that some of his other novels haven’t. For example, I remember reading Fluke and really liking it, but I don’t remember a lot of the details. I feel like I savored this book so much more as I read, due to the topic and because of all of the pictures and the online guide. It really came to life for me, which makes it a worthy read.

Sarah Says: 3.5 stars… (4 stars if the chapter guide comes out in book form, or as an addition to the paperback copy)

Sarah Sunday!

gabby my new kitty!

Our new kitty!

Good morning ladies and gents!Sarah update: Ohhhhhh man oh man oh man! We got a kitty! Meet Gabby, everyone! So on Monday night while me and the honeyman were out shopping with my sister Heather, he got a text from a friend who asked if we were interested in a free kitten. His boss’s cat had kittens and she was giving them away. We immediately laid claim to the only grey one in the bunch (the others were white with grey or tan spots), and finally on Thursday night we got to go pick her up! She’s two months old (which is cool, it means she was born at the end of February like me) and she’s just the cutest little furball. Sadly we brought her home about 4 hours before I had to go to work, and then Friday night we went out to celebrate a friend’s birthday, and then I went back to work, so Saturday night was the first night I really got to hang out with her for longer than a couple of hours. I can’t wait to leave work and go home to hang out with her and Treland tonight :-)  She seems to be getting used to her new environment and seems pretty happy. She purrs like crazy when we come home after being out for a while. And we’re pretty happy too. I have been begging the honeyman for a cat for AGES, and I really never thought he’d go along with it – mainly cause he always said no. I guess he likes me a little bit :-)

Gabby exploring :-)

So right, other stuff happened this week too I suppose. Well, Amanda and L came into town Tuesday night and stayed until Thursday night, so basically those two days flew by. It was fun though – on Wednesday we dropped L off with my mom and her and I went shopping with my friend Doni, and it was a great day. I got a new game called Coffee Talk, which is kind of like Scattergories and a lot of fun. (Heather: next time we hang out we have to drink coffee and play it!) On Thursday I had to finish shopping for our friend’s birthday and Amanda and L tagged along while I ran around like a mad woman trying to finish that up. And then of course that night we got Gabby.

Hehehe I caught her sleeping.

So, Friday night we went out for our friend’s birthday. We saw The Avengers, which was pretty awesome (duh, Joss Whedon was involved) and then we ate at The Cheesecake Factory and did presents and cake and then I had to rush home and get ready to go back to work. That was a rough night, but it was good times. My favorite gift that we got our friend was a DVD that Treland burned of all of the Epic Rap Battles of History. I totally want him to burn one for us. Also, yesterday after work was my nephew and niece’s birthday party! Josh is 7 now, and Emma is 4 (or, she will be in a few days). I can’t believe they’re so big now! Being the good aunt that I am, I got them each a book. Usually I get them a couple of books each, but this year I also got Josh a little kid’s science lab and I got Emma a big Hello Kitty craft set. We didn’t stay too long at the party though, because I was so tired and we wanted to get home to Gabby. When we got home I put on comfy clothes and then fell asleep with her on the couch. It was very sweet :)

Cute, tiny little girl :)

Bookish update: I only finished 1 book this week, Sacre Bleu by Christopher Moore. I’m hoping to work on the review today and have it up tomorrow. Today I’m going to start The Cottage at Glass Beach by Heather Barbieri, which I asked to be part of the TLC Tour for and I’m excited about. You all know I rarely accept ARC’s, but I asked to be part of this tour because I read The Lace Makers of Glenmara by the same author a couple of years ago and really liked it. And then hopefully I’ll finally be starting Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore! I don’t have much to do this week until I work on Thursday, so I intend on getting lots of reading time in, hopefully with Gabby hanging out with me. And if I can manage to finish both of those books this week then I’m going to start another non-fiction book about something science-y, because I’ve been itching too. Also, I’m trying not to buy any new science-related books until I’ve read another one off of my shelves – otherwise I’ll have another out of control shelf at home of books I haven’t even read.

OK so that’s my rambling for this morning! I apologize in advance if my Instagram or Twitter is flooded with pics of Gabby this week… I’ll try to restrain myself a bit. Hope everyone has a wonderful week!!!

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Can’t Wait to Read in 2012!

Hey there ya’ll, Happy New Year and welcome to 2012! This here is the first Top Ten Tuesday post of the year (hosted by The Broke and The Bookish) – this week’s topic is Top Ten Books You’re Excited to Read in 2012. I got lots!

1. Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes – So, I picked this book for the category of “Classic That’s Been Translated to English” for the Back to the Classics Challenge, because it’s a big classic and was originally written in Spanish. I wasn’t looking forward to it TOO much until I learned that my very wonderful, handsome honeyman has read it! And enjoyed it! Turns out he’s read several big classics that have always kind of intimidated me. (Seriously, LOVE that man!) Soooo, now I’m super excited to read it. I’m actually starting it today :-) And this is the translation I’m going with… I originally bought the B&N edition, but the translation looked… not great. And this one seems a lot easier. But if anyone has a recommendation to which is the BEST translation, let me know!

2. Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore – I’ve been waiting for this book for AGES! And it will finally be released on May 1st, 2012. This will probably be the book I’m looking forward to the most this year.

3. It Takes a Witch by Heather Blake – OK, so Heather Blake is ACTUALLY Heather Webber, the author of the super-adorable Lucy Valentine books that I like so much. This is a new series she’s starting, and although I wish she was writing more Lucy Valentine books instead, I’m going to try this too. It actually comes out today, so I may go buy it :-)

4. Sacre Bleu by Christopher Moore – New Christopher Moore book, comes out April 3rd. Need I say more?

5. The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett – This was recommended to me a few months ago by a friend of a friend. I bought it last week with my Christmas gift cards and I’m excited to try it out!

6. Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb – Jenn recommended this to me months ago and I ordered it from Amazon months ago, but I’ve been waiting until this year because I didn’t want to start a new series in the rest of 2011. So excited to finally read it!

7. The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud – My friend Doni has been recommending this kids / YA trilogy to me ever since we worked at Waldenbooks together like 6 or 7 years ago. I have the first book waiting on my shelf, and this shall be the year!

8. The Gemma Doyle Trilogy by Libba Bray – I love-love-LOVED Beauty Queens by Libba Bray, so I’m going to give these books a try. Once again, I already have the first book on my shelf. I’m so efficient. And a book hoarder.

9. The Pioneer Woman Cooks; Food From My Frontier by Ree Drummond – OK so this isn’t really a “reading” book, but the PW is coming out with a new cookbook on March 13th and I can’t wait! I looooove her first one – her recipe for chicken pot pie has totally captured the heart of my honeyman. Plus it’s really easy to follow the directions, and the pages are all gorgeous and colorful and she puts pretty pictures of her ranch and family and yeah, just awesome. It’s totally a cookbook that I’ll just flip through randomly and instantly want to try like every (non-beef or pork) recipe.

10. A Night Like This by Julia Quinn – This is supposed to come out in late spring (no solid date yet), but it’s the second book in the Smythe-Smith quartet by Julia Quinn. I really enjoyed the first book (Just Like Heaven), so I can’t wait!

So those are my ten! What books are you looking forward to in 2012?

~Sarah
