Sarah Sunday!

image

Goooooood morning.

Sarah update: Well, this week was busy, just like I expected. Lots of errand-running and laundry and a whole ton of cleaning. I got to see my little sis and L last Sunday, she kind of dropped by and stayed the night, and L is just TOO FUNNY. He’s very goofy and laughs a lot, and he also tries to eat slobber all over your face. So he’s adorable, but also kind of scary.

Tuesday was Election Day! I dragged the honeyman out of bed super early so that we could go vote without waiting in long lines. My older sis Heather came over that night for dinner (which, by the way, I made this and it was kind of awesome, I swear) and we went to the gym and watched lots of election coverage, and I stayed awake long enough for them to call it. I really like election coverage, it’s exciting and also a little nerve-wracking. This must be how guys feel when they watch really intense football games. Obviously I’m happy that Obama got re-elected. And while I don’t want to get all super-political on my blog, I do want to point out some of the assholeness of TV conservatives talking about the election. According to the exit polls, Romney got the most votes from white, suburban men over 65, which was obviously not enough to save his sorry ass. A bunch of guys like Bill O’Reilly and Limbaugh said that this isn’t a “traditional America” anymore – basically because white people aren’t the majority anymore, which means they don’t have the majority of the vote anymore. Obviously they (being rich white men) are distressed by this news, because they’re assholes, but I totally think it’s great. Maybe in the upcoming decades we’ll FINALLY have more diversity in politics and government. Also, two states legalized weed and something like four states legalized same-sex marriage. So all in all - awesome election year. I hope there’s a lot more like it.

On the weight loss front, I’m down about 22 lbs now. Only a few more lbs to go! Which means I’ll be done losing weight in another week or two, and then I’ll switch to trying to maintain a weight of around 165 lbs, and since I’m not going to stop working out I’ll probably switch to more strength training stuff. And I won’t bore you with these updates every week! I know you can’t wait for that!

When I started this a few months ago, I didn’t really take a “before” picture because I kind of just jumped right in. But Heather found a picture of us from June 2010 and then on Tuesday we took a picture together before heading to the gym, so we could compare. In the picture on the right, I was probably around 180 to 185 lbs or so (I was 190 when I started the weight-loss thing). And the picture on the left is me on Tuesday. I know it’s not a lot, but I think there’s a difference there and I’m pretty happy with it.

So hooray for almost being done! I actually think trying to stay at a certain weight will be harder than trying to lose weight… we’ll see.

What else… The Walking Dead was INSANE last week and I can’t wait to see tonight’s episode. Once Upon a Time was a really good episode too, because it’s the first time we see some of Emma’s backstory.

Bookish update: I finished The Fellowship of the Ring! I’ll hopefully be writing my review of it today or tomorrow. It took me a bit longer to finish than I was hoping, but that’s mainly because I was usually really busy or really tired or both. I enjoyed it, overall. And I’m thinking about watching the first LOTR movie, before I go on to the second book.

I’m now reading Medical Apartheid by Harriet A. Washington, apparently because I felt the need to depress the bejeezus out of myself. It’s a book chronicling the history of medical experimentation and abuse on black Americans in the last 200 years or so. It’s really interesting and obviously something people should be aware of, but it’s also nauseating / infuriating / sad / ALL THE EMOTIONS. Because seriously, how could people do crap like that to another person?

And I’m also reading the fifth Nightside book and Manhunting by Jennifer Crusie, just for some happier, fluffier fun. Cause when you want to relax in the tub with a book, you should read something happy and not something that makes you all rage-filled and disgusted with people. OR you can read Discovery magazine, which I happen to have just got in the mail yesterday, because magazines are fun to read in the tub too, even if they’re all science-y.

And on that note, I think I’m going to go read a bit and wish that I was home taking a bubble bath instead of at work. Hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Sarah Sunday!

Good morning people!

Sarah update: This week was largely spent on the Bout of Books Readathon. Even though I bombed on my goals some days, it’s been so much fun and I’m sad that today is the last day of it. I’ve read 2.5 books so far this week, and will hopefully finish other today. Compared to my reading habits for the year, this is awesome.

Anyhoo, I guess there was a life outside of books. Sunday was Mother’s Day & my sister Amanda graduated from college! Yay for her! And she’s slowly finding out her grades for this last semester and she’s gotten 4 A’s out of 6 so far. Yay Amanda! I did 5 whole loads of laundry on Monday, which sounds like no big deal, but YOU should run up and down 4 flights of stairs lugging laundry back and forth and you’ll be appropriately impressed. Tuesday night was game night, and I very happily got to indulge in wine and several amaretto sours with my friend Doni, and that was lots of fun. For some reason, her husband and my honeyman did not enjoy it as much. We must be a little silly when we drink. I can’t wait until we can have another girl’s night again.

And so Wednesday kind of flew by, and I’ve worked from Thursday to today. I was VERY grumpy on Friday, which sucks. And I feel KINDA bad for all the drivers that I snap at, but you know… it happens. Saturday at work was MUCH better, it was slow and I was able to read a whole lot. And because the weather has been GORGEOUS, the honeyman and I went out to dinner at Cheeburger Cheeburger and then walked around the beach and it was lovely. Walking around together was basically all we did when we first started dating almost 5 years ago and it’s so rare that we get to do it now, so when we do go walking around places it makes me extra happy. I wanted to take lots of pictures at the beach, but there was people everywhere and I don’t want a bunch of stupid people in my pictures, so I didn’t.

And now here it is, Sunday! Last day of the readathon, and I have about 7 hours to squeeze lots of reading in, because it’s date night tonight! I think that might involve going to see that new movie Dictator, which looks hilarious. It’s the first Sacha Baron Cohen movie I’ve actually wanted to see.

Tomorrow (Monday) I’m torn between making it a spring-cleaning kind of day, or just laying around and catching up on tv type of day. I’m leaning towards a lazy day, but we’ll see.

Reading update:  Well, the Bout of Books Readathon, duh. Which by the way, the next one I think is going to be sometime in August and you should all participate. It’s a week long and so much more relaxed and groovy than a 24-hour readathon. I actually think this might be my favorite readathon of all the thons.

Anyhoo, I’m also still reading for the American Gods Readalong, which is going lovely. I finished two books so far this week, The Dead and The Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer (lame) and Aloha From Hell by Richard Kadrey (awesome). I’m about 2/3 of the way through Why Does E=Mc2? by Brian Cox & Jeff Forshaw, and I have to say that I’m not crazy about it, but I’ll explain all that in my eventual review. Hopefully I can finish it today.

I also participated in my first TLC Book Tour this week, with my review of The Cottage at Glass Beach by Heather Barbieri. I enjoyed working with TLC, but the downside is that seems like I’m getting a whole bunch of random review-request emails now and it doesn’t seem like they’re from TLC. It’s kind of annoying because my review policy says that I generally don’t accept review requests – I am that one that requested to be part of the TLC Tour for this book, so that was different. Oh well. It was still exciting to be a part it!

And lastly, Armchair BEA is coming up the first week of June! Is anyone else joining in? This will be my first year so I’m looking forward to it. In past years it always seemed like I found out about it too late, but this year I was on the lookout for it! So you know, who else is gonna do it?

And now I shall get back to my reading for the day. I hope everyone has a wonderful week!!

Winter Mini-Readathon Mini-Challenge #3!

So, how’s everyone holding up? It’s officially the halfway point!

Sadly, I have no real updates. Somehow I got no reading done during the last 3 hours… I made my sister watch some funny songs on YouTube (I’m On a Boat & I’m Awesome, in cause you were wondering), we did her bonus challenge post, made some cucumber sandwiches, made more coffee, chatted, etc… This is what happens when you have two sisters who don’t get to hang out enough, and throw them together all day with food and drinks.

Anyhoo, on with the next challenge! The challenge is to use random objects around your house to spell out the word “read”, take a picture of it, post it on your blog, and then come back here to leave the link in the comments!

Here is mine…

We’re not alcoholics, I swear. The honeyman doesn’t even drink, lol, but he had all of his friends save bottlecaps for him for some game he wants to play. Lucky for me, they made this challenge easy-peasy :-) But you can use ANY OBJECTS around your house.

See you in 3 hours, when Jenn will be hosting a mini-challenge!

>I present to you – Hot Guys Reading Books.

http://hotguysreadingbooks.tumblr.com/

I came across this site online and it’s pretty darn fun – just a lot of pictures of random guys reading. And the blurbs beneath the photos are pretty funny too. I wonder if I can convince my honeyman to let me take a picture of him reading? Hmmmmm…..

Enjoy!

>Annual Booksale Loot!

>Every year, my local library holds a HUGE booksale at the nearby mall, and I love it! About 20 long tables set up with a ton of all kinds of books – hardcovers $1, paperbacks 50 cents. Last year I bought forty-something books… this year I was able to restrain myself a bit, lol. I only bought 17.

On the top: this is actually an ARC I received in the mail today – Madame Toussad by Michelle Moran

Left stack, top to bottom:

~Lady Whistledown Strikes Back by Julia Quinn & co-authors
~Panther in the Sky by James Alexander Thom
~Sandcastles by Luanne Rice
~To Be A Slave by Julius Lester
~The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
~The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
~ King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table by Roger Lancelyn Green
~White Teeth by Zadie Smith
~Say You’re One of Them by Uwem Akpan

Right Stack, top to bottom:

~Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury (bought this for my honeyman)
~The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton
~Feed by M.T. Anderson
~Uglies by Scott Westerfield
~Durable Goods by Elizabeth Berg
~The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood
~The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
~Off Season by Anne River Siddons

All in all, a pretty good haul for only $9! I might check back there on Monday, when books are $3 for all you can fit in a bag.

Also, after I finish the Harry Potter book I’m currently reading, I’ll be starting that Michelle Moran ARC, so keep an eye out for that review – the book will be released February 15th, so my review will give you time to decide whether or not to get it!
