Coraline readalong! Post #2

So, the end of the book! Here’s my thoughts…

The other mother got even creepier, especially with the hand thing at the end. *Shudders* Coraline was a totally brave little girl, and she rocks for outsmarting the other mother. But even though she was scared and everything, the one I felt the most bad for was the cat! Poor thing was TERRIFIED of the other mother (although I did laugh out loud when she threw him at her). That cat was awesome.

Overall, this was a fun, weird, twisted book. Although the skeptical part of me is doubtful about her plan to trap that hand… what if it gets out? I think she should have tried to smash it, but I guess since she’s a little girl that might have been a little too gory. But still. I fully believe in the double-tap – you don’t want a baddie suddenly coming after you when you think it’s safe.

As for the movie… ehh. The book was great, and I’ll totally re-read it sometime. But I thought the movie wasn’t done quite as well – movie Coraline was kind of a brat. And it kind of dragged up until the end, when the other mother started getting all scary. And Wybie was a really random addition… I mean he was a sweet kid, but he totally didn’t need to be there.

Anyways, this was a fun book to read this month! Thanks Jenn for hosting the readalong :-)

Coraline readalong! Post #1

I’m really enjoying it so far. It’s weird and creepy and I LOVE that cat.

“We… we could be friends, you know,” said Coraline.

“We could be rare specimens of an exotic breed of African dancing elephants,” said the cat. “But we’re not.”

How fun :)

So, overall I really have no clue where the story is going… I assume that at some point, Coraline is able to save her real parents and escape this crazy place. I’m hoping they go into a little more detail about the weird “other” parents and where they came from and why they’re there, and why the dad one refers to the mom one.

I have to say though, I don’t feel so bad for Coraline’s real parents. They were totally ignoring her! Poor little girl.

Also, I really really wanna see the movie now! I’ve never seen it before, I don’t think I even ever paid attention to the trailers when it was first coming out. But it looks fun! And perfect to watch with Halloween coming up…

I found it at Target for $5 today, so hopefully I’ll be watching that sometime this week or next… I’ll finish the book before I watch it, so that I can compare :)

Also, is there some sort of relevance to the mice / rat things that I’m not getting, other than that they’re spies for the other mom? And what about the two little old ladies? Is there some hidden meaning about the buttons for eyes? Whenever I read Neil Gaiman, I feel like I’m overlooking stuff (I’m so bad at symbolism).

What do you guys think so far?

The Graveyard Book Readalong Ch. 7 & 8

Awwwww! It’s over! *tears up* I’m sad that this is the last post, this was a really fun book to readalong with and discuss every week!

So how does Bod’s story end?

Well, first he’s a bit mopey because Silas and Miss Lupescu have been gone for what seems like ages and he’s a bit lonely. And THEN we find out that Scarlett is back in town! Hooray! Her and her mom have moved back and she’s kind of forgotten about Bod and the graveyard until she winds up there one day and meets a nice little old man named Mr. Frost and then that night her and Bod have a reunion in her dream. So of course her and Bod kind of meet again and catch up and he shares with her his sad family story and Scarlett asks Mr. Frost to help her learn more about that family 13 years ago that was murdered, you know, for a friend. (Meanwhile, Silas and Miss Lupescu are off doing mysterious but dangerous things.) Then Mr. Frost says he learned a lot and for Scarlett to bring her friend over so he can share what he learned and it turns out Mr. Frost is Mr. Stabby Jack Frost and HOW DID I NOT SEE THAT COMING???  And then some other Jacks show up and chases and stuff ensue… and of course Bod comes out alright and then it’s time for him to leave the graveyard and finally experience life.

So, questions!

1. We see the return of Scarlett, were you happy to see her again? Do you think her mother paid her enough attention?

Yes! Yay Scarlett! And her mother seemed more attentive this time around, although she was a little over-protective now. Oddly, she let her 5-year old daughter do whatever she wanted but now that she’s a teenager she has all these rules. I’m a little sad at how Bod’s friendship with her ended, but in my head I like to imagine they meet again someday.

2. Getting a ride from a “friendly” stranger when it’s raining…yay or nay?

Oh hell no. NO. And this is exactly the kind of situation that makes me think ALL GIRLS SHOULD CARRY WEAPONS. What if he had tried to force her?

3. Did you figure out “Stabby Jack’s” (best nickname ever, Sarah!!) new tactic before it was revealed? Evil genius or just creepy evil?

Thanks Jenn :-) And no, I did not see if coming. This creepy random old guy introduces himself as Jay Frost and lives in Bod’s old house, and I STILL never saw it coming. I’m ridiculous. It was creepy evil genius.

4. Final thoughts on Ms. Lupescu?

:-(

5. Do you think it’s a good idea to send Bod into the world at age 15?

I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad idea… He’s definitely more mature than a normal 15 year old boy. And at least Silas hooked him up with money and a passport. I am a bit confused as to why he had to leave the graveyard at 15 though… was he no longer welcome there because he was no longer in danger? If so, why did he slowly lose his abilities over the course of a month or two?

6. Were you touched by any goodbye more than the others?

Silas and Bod’s goodbye was sad. I was hoping they would head off into the world together, at least for a while so Silas could teach him a bit more about the ways of the world.

7. Where do you think Bod will go and what will happen to him?

I like to think that he goes off into the world to read all the books and see all the places, before coming back to his hometown as a fit and healthy old man who meets up with Scarlett, gets married, dies, and gets to live in his graveyard again.

8. Final thoughts on Silas? Is he a vampire or some supernatural other?

Vampire! Vampire! Vampire!

9. Are you glad you read The Graveyard Book and would you take a chance on reading Gaiman’s other YA works?

I really, really enjoyed The Graveyard Book and I am looking forward to reading his other YA / childrens books. I liked this a whole lot more than I did American Gods. I wonder if I should try Stardust next? Or maybe there will be a Stardust readalong in the future? (She says hopefully.)

Thanks so much for hosting Jenn! This was a blast!

The Graveyard Book Readalong Ch. 5 & 6

Aww man, it’s the second-to-last week of Jenn’s readalong! Kinda sad that we’ll be done next week.

So, what happened this week in the land of Bod?

Well, there was that weird creepy dance that I honestly did not understand. I didn’t really like that chapter… It was a bunch of dead people being all mysterious about this big dance coming up and the alive people in town acting like dancing-zombies and it was weird. Then came the interlude, in which we see Stabby Jack again and apparently some colleagues of his masquerading as philanthropists are pissed that it’s been a decade and he still hasn’t finished off the boy. And Stabby Jack makes a reference to “that trouble we had in San Francisco” which it seems means that Silas went and caused some trouble there when he left for a while. Odd. And then next chapter Bod gets up the nerve to say that he wants to go to school and learn how to be around living people and read all the books (yay!) and so he does, but then he makes himself a big damn hero (Firefly, anyone?) and starts trying to help out the kids being bullied by these big jerks named Nick and Mo, but that draws attention to himself and Mo just does not learn to fall the eff back, and she ends up getting him arrested. And then Silas is told that Bod is in trouble, so he runs in front of the cop car and Bod psyches the cops out about that, and they escape. Luckily, this wasn’t all for nothing, since Silas and Bod agree that while he shouldn’t be restricted from the real world any longer, maybe school wasn’t the best idea and he still needs to keep a low profile.

So, questions!

1. Would you dance the Macabre?

…No? I don’t know. If I was dead would I have the choice? I really don’t get what that was all about.

2. Why do you think that Silas and the others are so secretive about it?

Maybe they’re just as confused as I am, but pretending to be secretive and mysterious about it. Silas did seem slightly bummed cause he couldn’t join, so maybe the weird dance is a good thing.

3. Why do you think the flowers haven’t bloomed in decades?

Seriously, I have no clue. This is probably why I didn’t take literature in college, because I’m not always very good at symbolism and stuff like that.

4. Who do you think the men were with the Man Jack?

They seemed like fellow assassins, and that one guy seemed like one of his bosses maybe? They were clearly at some sort of benefit / charity thingy, which honestly seems like the perfect cover for a group of assassins, if that’s what they are.

5. Why do you think he’s running out of time?

Maybe because Bod is growing older? Although how do they know that he’s still alive and hasn’t died through some other random means? Can they sense him? There’s probably a supernatural reason here that I’m missing.

6. What do you think of Bod’s being in school? His classmates? The “arrest”?

I loved that he went to school! And that he basically wanted to read all the time! And I even liked him playing the hero, even though I usually don’t particularly like heroic personas. He’s just such a good kid, and I like that he encouraged the smaller kids to think and act for themselves, and to stand up to Nick and Mo for themselves, rather than just fighting their battle for them. That’s EXACTLY what kids who feel they’re being bullied need to do!

The arrest was such crap! Mo is a little bitch.

7. What are your thoughts on Silas’ rescue?

Awwww, Silas. He does really feel fond for Bod. It’s sweet. It was a perfectly executed rescue too, even if he did get a little banged up in the process. I also love that Bod came back to the school one last time to scare the crap out of Mo. She had it coming.

8. Do you think that there is a connection between Silas and the Man Jack?

Yes. Not in a sketchy way, I just think that Silas was on to Stabby Jack somehow in San Fran and even if they didn’t interact directly, he clearly caused some trouble for Stabby Jack and his crew while he was there. Yay Silas! I am curious as to how he knew to go to San Fran to try to find out more about Stabby Jack, or if he was there for another reason and it was just something he stumbled upon.

So yeah, good stuff! Like I said, I didn’t really like the dance chapter but I liked the rest. And even though I’m sad next week is the last post, I am really looking forward to seeing how the book ends and how Bod’s story is wrapped up!

The Graveyard Book Readalong Ch. 3 & 4

Alrighty then, post numero dos in Jenn’s readalong of The Graveyard Book! (Sorry this is a day late guys, past couple days have been CRAZY busy.)

Soooo, where did we last leave our intrepid hero?

Well, Silas decides he has to take a field trip to someplace to get some sort of information, and Bod has a rare very living-child-like tantrum about it. He whines and is all upset, and Silas leaves him in the care of a stern lady named Mrs. Lupescu who does all sorts of horrible things like try to teach him stuff and feed him nutritious food instead of the processed junk he’s been eating his whole life. Anyways, Bod is all upset and ends up deciding to go with 2 super creepy little men-thingys that end up being ghouls, and ghouls suck. And they wanna make him a ghoul too, and we don’t even wanna know what kind of horrible process that would be, and Bod is able to kind of save himself by calling for help in a weird supernatural language – and guess who taught him that? Mrs. Lupescu! Who also happens to be the one to come save his ass in her werewolf-form. Yay! And they bond, and Silas comes back, and everyone’s hunky-dory. Then Bod acts afool again by going to the part of the graveyard that’s unconsecrated and befriending the ghost of a witch named Liza and he wants to do something nice for her, like get her a headstone. He goes back to the super-creepy-crypt and steals a brooch and then he ACTUALLY SNEAKS OUT OF THE GRAVEYARD and goes to a pawnshop to sell it and get enough dough to buy her a headstone. And the pawnshop owner is a jerk named Abanazer Bolger who figures out that Bod is some weird creepy kid with no parents near by, so he locks him in the backroom to find out where the brooch came from so he can go and get more treasure, and he also considers calling this weird guy named Jack who happened to be looking for a strange boy… and then Liza shows up and helps Bod do some Fading-thingy and he’s able to escape. He goes back to the graveyard, gets lectured, and is able to give Liza her headstone – awww.

Wow, that was a long recap… and probably unnecessary. Oh well. Onward to some discussion questions!

1. What do you think Silas left to find out and of his bringing a present back for Bod?

I have NO CLUE what Silas left to go do… Maybe it was to try to find out more about Stabby Jack? Although why would he do that after this long? No clue. And awww that he brought Bod a present. That’s such a human thing to do, bring back a souvenir for someone.
2. Do you that that Miss Lupescu is hard on Bod or in comparison that the others are too soft?

I think the others are too soft. It’s probably part of that whole we’re-dead-anyways-so-screw-it thing, but the ghosts in the graveyard should at least remember that it’s not good for a kid to be raised on nothing but convenience store junk food! And of course he could and should be learning more than he does just from them.
3. Do you find anything fascinating about the ghouls? What did you like most about the whole adventure?

The ghouls were weird. I didn’t know what to think about them, but they sounded creepy as all hell. I don’t get the whole naming-ourselves-as-famous-important-people deal, or what they really get out of turning a kid into a ghoul, or anything like that. I did however like that the whole thing kind of made Bod stop being such a little creep and appreciate Mrs. Lupescu. And YAY her for being an big scary werewolf / Hound of God.

4. Did those scenes alter your opinion of Miss Lupescu?

Well I kind of already liked her, so this just cemented my approval of her.

5. Do you think that Bod was disobeying when he went to the Potter’s field?

Yes. Cause you know, everyone said “Hey! Don’t go near there!” which meant that of course he had to go there and get into mischief. It’s not really clear why they’re all so wary of it though. Just because it’s unconsecrated ground? Or because there’s criminals buried there? Or because the graveyard people are jealous that the ones buried there have more freedom to move about?

This part is where I’ve found my favorite quote of the book so far, from Silas of course:

“Wherever you go, you take yourself with you.”

6. What do you think of the Liza being a witch or the way that she was killed?

I think good for her! She obviously got really screwed over there. There’s so many stories of women who were screwed over by men they were romantically involved with, and got burned as witches. Of course in this case she actually was, but good! I’m glad she was able to you know, exact her revenge. I’m so glad I wasn’t alive back then, things really sucked for women.

7. Do you think Bod’s new found ability to Fade will change his fate?

I didn’t quite realize that she permanently helped him with his Fading… I thought that was a one-time only kind of deal. Although now I just went to kind of re-read that section, and I guess he does imply that he thinks he can Fade now, so… cool? I think it’ll definitely help him out a lot, since he’s hiding from Stabby Jack, not that he exactly knows that.

8. How do you feel about the headstone that Bod made for Liza, and what he wrote on it?

It just made me go “Awwwww you’re a good kid.” If I was there I probably would’ve ruffled his hair a bit.

OK so that’s my long-winded post! I’m thinking I may go ahead and read the next chapters today, because I’ll be busy the rest of the week doing anniversary stuff and spending time with the honeyman :-)

The Graveyard Book Readalong Ch. 1 & 2

Yay, week 1 of The Graveyard Book readalong hosted by Jenn!

Oooo I love the writing in this book so far! Maybe THIS is the kind of Gaiman I can really get on board with, the children’s kind! Of course, it’s not very kid-friendly, since it starts with some super creepy murders by a creepy man named Jack, but still. I also love the wispy drawings in the beginnings of the chapters.

So, for some unknown reason this scary man named Jack is in a house being all stabby-stabby and the last one he’s after is a little boy, basically a toddler. But this particular toddler is like a ninja at just wandering around and, lucky duck, he wanders out of the house and into a graveyard just as Stabby Jack is one his way to get him. Once said baby boy gets to the graveyard he starts cuddling up to some nice old ghosts named Mr. & Mrs. Owens and then the ghosts of the baby ghosts parents show up and are all “Please watch our baby!” before they disappear. And the baby boy grows up a bit and meets a human girl and they become friends and then her parents whisk her away to Scotland.

So, now little Nobody is going to be raised in the graveyard by the Owens’ and a cool guy named Silas who I’m not 100% sure, but I think he’s a vampire.

And now for the sake of not rambling on forever, Jenn’s discussion questions:

What were your initial first impressions of the characters?
Jack is hella creepy, the baby is cute, and I like Silas. The Owens seem kind of not-bright, but sweet. And I liked Scarlett.
How did the ghost of Bod’s mother make you feel?
Sad, obvs. I mean, poor woman.
Do you think that Nobody is a good name for a boy?
No. See, this is what I meant about the Owens.
What are your thoughts on Silas and the woman on the grey horse?
I really dig Silas, and there seems to be some mystery surrounding him and I’m totally guessing it’s that he’s a vampire. I like that he’s pushing reading. The woman on the grey horse… that was weird.
Do you think it’s a good thing that Bod has Freedom of the Graveyard and thus other powers?
Yeah, especially since he might still be in danger. But come on, powers are almost always a good thing.
Do you think it’s okay to let a child play in a graveyard like Scarlett’s parents did?
Nope, only weirdos just hang out in a graveyard. But her parents also seemed more interested in their work than they were in her, so maybe that’s why they were all chill about it.
Why do you think Scarlett’s parents are so eager to claim imaginary friends?
Cause otherwise you just assume your kid is crazy… and then when they don’t grow out of it, you realize your kid probably really is crazy. I think it’s a natural response for them though.
Did the semantics of the Tattoo Man seem obvious to you or was it a bit frightening?
No… I have no idea what the hell that was all about. When the kids figured it out, I was like “Good for you!” because I probably would have just run like the idiot that fell and died there.
What do you think were Scarlett’s parents real motivations in moving the family to Scotland?
To get her the heck away from that graveyard, since that’s where her imaginary friend was and where they thought she was almost kidnapped. I can’t say I blame them. Plus, I’d love to go to Scotland.

I’m a little sad to have to wait to read the next 2 chapters! I want to see Bod grow up a little more, and I want to know why Stabby Jack was after that family, and I want to know is Silas is really a vampire or if I’m just horribly wrong.

Fun!

American Gods by Neil Gaiman – FINAL READALONG POST

American Gods readalong

Alrighty, finished the book = lots to talk about!

The old gods agree to meet the new gods in a neutral place to give them Wednesday’s body, and surprisingly that goes okay. At the same time, Wednesday discovers that his old friend Low-Key is actually Loki (man how did I not see that a mile away???) and he’s working for the old/bad gods and you know that sucks.

Shadow decides that he needs to keep his agreement with Wednesday about keeping vigil because he died, and which apparently in godspeak means you get tied to a tree for 9 days with no food… obviously that didn’t work out so hot for Shadow, but he feels all happy that he did such a major thing and he really feels alive, and then of course he dies and goes through the underworld and of course he doesn’t stay dead for along… that whole thing was really predictable, at least to me. Can’t have the protagonist dying off with 60 pages left to go. Oh and Shadow finds out that Wednesday is his daddy. I figured they had some sort of tie, because otherwise Wednesday wouldn’t have hounded Shadow so hard and wouldn’t have really needed him, but still a cool revelation.

So Shadow then comes back to life and discovers that this whole this was a two-man con between Loki & Wednesday to have a bunch of gods kill each other in a major battle so that they would become strong again (and in Wednesday’s case, alive again). And while it was a dick move… I don’t think I necessarily like Wednesday any less. I mean it’s screwed up to try to sacrifice all of your god-friends just so that you get a power boost, but the meaner, more evil side of me just kind of shrugs and says “Gotta do what ya gotta do.”

Laura did some good stuff, but I still hate her and I’m happy with how her little story ended. And I KNEW something was up with Mr. Hinzelmann!!! I knew it! Gross old bastard. As for the ending… I don’t know. Kinda bummed that Wednesday didn’t come back, but technically the real Odin is still alive, which is weird. Gaiman’s whole mythology is just weird.

So… this book was interesting, but honestly without the readalong I might have DNF-ed it again. While I kind of liked Shadow and Wednesday, I just didn’t care overall. I would have liked more focus on the gods – more info on how they came about, how the new ones were created, what the implications of the old and new gods on society are, if there are any. Seems like there was so much more to explore there. The writing didn’t hook me in, with the exception of Sam’s speech earlier. Part of me just feels like Neil Gaiman was trying way too hard with this one. Maybe I’ll like his kids books better. The ending seemed to leave the possibility of a sequel open and if there is one, I probably won’t read it.

I do want to say a major thanks to Jenn for hosting this! Maybe she’ll even consider hosting a readalong for The Graveyard Book or something….hmmmmm…   :-)

Sarah Says: 2.5 stars, overall.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman – READALONG POST 3

American Gods readalong

Whoops, posting this a day late. Anyways, week 3 of Jenn’s American Gods readalong. Woot woot!

So whoa, stuff hits the fan in these chapters. Shadow is settling in pretty comfortably in Lakeside, living as “Mike Ainsel”. Wednesday occassionally comes and  they go on trips, but it seems like a stretch of time passes where this is kind of routine and Shadow is coming to really like Lakeside and the people there. I have a sneaking suspicion about Mr. Hinzelmann, that he’s older than he lets on and that there’s more to him and his story. Shadow came upon a “Mr. Hinzelmann” in those old Lakeside notes, and I’m wondering if there’s no first name there on purpose because maybe it’s the same Mr. Hinzelmann? Or maybe he’s somehow connected to all of those missing children? I’m not sure, I guess I’ll have to wait to find out.

Lots of characters come back in these chapters, and I was particularly thrilled with Sam’s crazy long speech about all the random and seemingly odd things that she believes in. I knew I liked her. Anyhoo, eventually Shadow’s cover is blown (because of stupid Audrey) and it’s found out who he really is, and he’s locked up for “violating his parole”. Luckily Ibis, Mr. Nancy, and Czernobog come pick him up before the black hats can get to him, but sadly Wednesday was killed. At least it seems that way, I’m not quite sure if he can come back from getting his brainpan all shot up. This is kind of sad…. I liked Wednesday, and Shadow realizes that he was growing attached to him too. I’m wondering why Wednesday didn’t bring Shadow along for this so-called “truce” talk… Wasn’t Shadow basically supposed to be his bodyguard for this kind of thing? Why would Wednesday walk into such an obviously dangerous situation?

Needless to say, lots happened here and I’m really interested to see how things turn out. Although I still feel a little clueless as to what the gods (new and old) stand to gain from this upcoming war… but I’m comforted that Shadow seems just as lost in that respect. Oh and I have no clue what the whole thunderbird things meant, but I hope it doesn’t mean that Shadow is actually able to bring his wife back. Whiskey Jack was right - the dead should stay dead, especially when the dead person in question is a cheating hoebag.

So, final section is coming up! I’m really excited to see how everything all comes together. Already in this section it seemed as if past events and people were coming back and everything is getting kind of interwoven. I really want to know if Wednesday can come back or not, who Mr. Hinzelmann really is, what Shadow’s whole purpose in this whole war-among-the-gods is, and if he succeeds in bringing his skanky wife back to life.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman – READALONG POST 2

American Gods readalong

Alrighty, so week 2 of Jenn’s readalong!

These chapters seemed a little filler-ish to me. It was like 108 pages, but I feel like hardly anything happened. Except that I’m pretty sure he had sex with a cat… Maybe I read it wrong, but it seemed like it.

So after his dead wife helps him escape, Shadow makes his way to a town where he buys a cheap car. He gives some girl named Sam a ride, then makes his way to a little town where he meets some of Wednesday’s friends, who happen to be operators of a funeral home. Some bad crap with Mad Sweeney goes down, and then Wednesday comes to pick him up, and then promptly deserts him again. He sends Shadow to a tiny town in Wisconsin called Lakeside, where Shadow seems to get along pretty well with lots of super friendly people. Wednesday scoops him up again to go convince a creepy random other god to join his cause, then dumps Shadow back in Lakeside.

I’m starting to feel some sort of fondness for Shadow. He seems like an all around good guy, and I feel bad that he somehow got caught up in Wednesday’s mess. I’m wondering why exactly Wednesday needs him – being a driver is kind of a lame excuse. And I do think that Shadow would be relatively happy if he could just be left alone to settle down in Lakeside. Of course, the black hat guys might track him down there eventually, but still.

Also, I liked Jacquel  and Ibis. I hope they make an appearance again. Same with Sam. I’m not sure she had a major point to the story, but I liked her.

So, that’s about it I guess. I hope the next section has a little bit more action to it, and not so much Shadow-killing-time-while-Wednesday-jerks-around.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman – READALONG POST 1

American Gods readalong

So, yay, a readalong! It’s probably not too late to join in, just go visit Jenn’s sign-up post. So you know, spoilers for the first 6 chapters…

I had started and DNF-ed this book a few years ago, I think because I got bored or something. But so far, I’m enjoying this way more than I remember. I don’t know, maybe it’s that I’m taking more time to savor it? Or that I’m just “in the mood” for it now. Not sure.

So, Shadow gets out of jail early due to his wife being a hoebag. OK, that’s a little harsh. I actually thought that the times when he’s reminiscing about her, like when they first met, were super sweet and Laura sounds like a wonderful person. And I felt really, really bad for him when he found out that she had died. But you know, then you find out why she died and yeah… hoebag. Oh and Robbie too. Hoebag. (And the word of the day is….? Hoebag! I hate cheaters.)

I like Shadow more than I remember. I guess I just must feel for him, or maybe I’m seeing his personality more than before. However, I wish he wasn’t so darn laid-back about stuff, like his crazy weird circumstances meeting Wednesday and why he would just accept a job from a total stranger. Or why his wife is acting distinctly not-dead. That seems like stuff you should kind of seriously freak out about.

Wednesday is a creepy mama-jama, but you have to admit that he has a bit of flair about him.

I’m enjoying the little side stories, although the first one with the scary hooker was, you know, scary. I also liked the one about Essie. I kind of wish people believed in more superstitions like that, although I guess it’s something you just kind of grow up with, and I guess that’s a big point of the book is that when this stuff isn’t passed on, it’s lost.

The story is really just picking up and I’m actually looking forward to reading more. And learning more! While I’m intrigued, the beginning is a TAD slow-going cause stuff is still being set up and whatnot. But I’m enjoying it so far. Success! At least so far. Will this be a Gaiman novel that I actually really like? (she says hopefully)…

 What’s everyone else thinking?
