Readathon! THE END.

Woooooo, it’s the end of the readathon! Which was so fun and awesome, and I’m already looking forward to whenever in October the next one is.

Thank you SO SO MUCH to the organizers, challenge hosts, prize donors, cheerleaders, and everyone else who makes Dewey’s readathon such a big deal!

End-of-Event Meme

  1. Which hour was most daunting for you? Ummm hours 18 through 22 were pretty rough. I was still really tired and couldn’t focus on my book, so I spent a lot of time online, visiting blogs and clearing out my Bloglovin reader.
  2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? Sure! Holes by Louis Sachar was really good, if you’re okay with reading kids books! Also any Harry Potter is a good pick too, or any other really interesting YA.
  3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? I don’t think so! It worked pretty darn well, I think.
  4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? The challenges were SUPER fun this time around! I don’t usually participate in that many, but I really enjoyed a lot of them.
  5. How many books did you read? Finished 2 and started a 3rd.
  6. What were the names of the books you read? The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, Holes by Louis Sachar, and I started Something Rotten by Jasper Fforde. Soooo… 477 pages total, which isn’t much but I’m still okay with it.
  7. Which book did you enjoy most? Probably The Song of Achilles.
  8. Which did you enjoy least? I liked all of them, but I think Something Rotten wasn’t the best pick for my last book. I forgot how much focus you kind of need to read the Thursday Next books and my muddled brain was just not up to the task.
  9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders? I wasn’t a cheerleader this year, but I think the cheerleaders did a FAB job!
  10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? OF COURSE I’ll be participating again! And most likely just as a reader, but depending on how busy life is at that time, mayyyybe as a cheerleader or challenge hostess.

So yeah, I had so much fun! I’m slightly regretting ALL THE SNACKS yesterday, so today will be a light food day. I still feel so full from dinner 12 hours ago.

Aaaand now I have 6 hours left of work, and guess what I’m gonna do? Read and blog some more! Catch ya’ll later.

Good morninnnggg! And Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Sarah update: I only had 3 days off this week, so it by in a blur. Tuesday night for game night we watched the first several episodes of Cougar Town season 4 and drank a whole lotta wine, which was wonderful. I found a new cheap wine that I love, Ravat 51.

My mom came home this week! She’s been off travelling in the south since New Year’s pretty much, so I’m SUPER HAPPY that she’s home and I’m hoping I can get her to stay for a goooood long time. My little sis and L also visited yesterday, so we went out to eat. L is a cutie.

Workout FAIL this week. I only went to the gym once. But somehow I’m still maintaining right around the 155 area, so that’s good. Definitely will be better about going this week.

Oh, Google pissed off a ton of bloggers because they’re getting rid of Google Reader by July. THAT SUCKS, GOOGLE. After trying to check out a bunch of the alternatives suggested, I think I’ve settled on Bloglovin. Everyone keeps pushing Feedly, but it doesn’t work well on my work computer and it seems app-based instead of browser-based. There were a couple others,  but they either also didn’t work well on the work computer, or you had to pay to use it, or something. Bloglovin seems to be working okay so far. I’m sure I’ll get used to it.

Anyways… yeah. Not much excitement this week. I MISS MY LAPTOP. Parts came in, so hopefully it’ll be fixed soon.

Bookish update: I finished HP&tGoF, and Vanity Fair, but that’s it. I’ve been reading The Map of Time by Felix J. Palma and I’m halfway through it… but I’m thinking about quitting it. I just haven’t been looking forward to picking it up… I don’t think I like the direction the story is taking, and I’ve only been reading a few pages at a time. I don’t know. After reading 300 pages I think I should just man up and finish it, but I also have a ton of other books that I really want to read instead, so we’ll see.

Good advice, Laurie.

Since I was struggling with The Map of Time, I decided to go ahead and start the third Ketty Jay book, The Iron Jackal. I’m about 100 pages in and so totally loving it, so that was a good choice. I’m sad that I haven’t gotten a whole lot of reading done since Monday. I’ve been really, really tired this week (combination of being busy and not sleeping well) and work has been busier than normal. I tried looking for a readathon taking place sometime this month to motivate me, but there’s nothing really going on until the Dewey readathon in April, it seems. Sooo…

I’m having my own little readathon on Wednesday. Let’s call it the Go-Away-I’m-Reading Readathon. I’m not going to clean or do much of anything except chill on the couch in my pj’s and read all damn day. Obviously since I don’t have the laptop at home yet, this isn’t an event that I’ll be doing a blog post about. I’ll be on Twitter and Instagram on my phone. If you have any spare time on Wednesday morning or night and want to read and chat on Twitter, feel free to join me! No prizes, no time constraints, no challenges – just reading and some socializing.

Anyways, I’m off to schedule a few posts for the week and then attempt to read. I hope ya’ll have having a lovely weekend!

~Sarah

P.S. I almost forgot – Epic Rap Battles of History has an app now!!! My mind = blown. And if you still haven’t checked out ERBoH, what are doing with your life?

Wearing the purse I got for Christmas, we showed Gabby snow, & her cuddling under a blanket.

Good morning people reading this!

Sarah update: Well let’s make this brief. New Years was fun, New Years Day was AWESOME. The honeyman and I both had off of work, and we laid around the house in our pj’s all day while he played video games and I read and blogged. I worked this week, it sucked, and it has been FREAKING FREEZING which really sucks and makes me wanna move. OH and my mommy came home!!!!! She has been in N.C. since like right after Thanksgiving and I have never gone a whole month without seeing my mom and I missed her a lot. She’s probably going back to N.C. early this week, so I have to try to see her as much as I can until then.

This week should be great though, because I have 4 days off and there’s a readathon happening and I can go to the gym a lot. Aaaaaand on Tuesday night Cougar Town season 4 starts!

cougar town gif

I already have wine waiting for me in the fridge. I have been missing CT for so long.

OH OH OH and last night the honeyman put together the revolving bookshelf he got me for Christmas!!! Eeeeeeeeeee!!!! I decided to use it for books that I haven’t read yet but are higher on my priority list than the other books I own that I haven’t read yet (there are SO MANY). I’m hoping this inspires me to work harder at reading the books I already own. Although I did make a “library books” section too.

Such a beautiful blank canvas...

Such a beautiful blank canvas…

In all its glory.

In all its glory.

Bookish update: I read 3 books so far this year! Woo hoo! I read Jam by Yahtzee Croshaw, Weird Things Customers Say in Bookstores by Jen Campbell, and Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan. And now I’m reading Hyperspace by Michio Kaku, which the honeyman got me for Christmas. I’m hoping to read enough of Hyperspace while I’m at work today that I can finish it tomorrow during the readathon. This is awesome, I still feel really motivated and inspired to devour books at a rapid pace. I hope the whole year is like that.

Oh yeah, and the Bout of Books readathon starts on Monday! You can still sign up – it’s a totally relaxed week-long readathon, and it’s so so fun. Probably my favorite readathon, because there’s very little stress, lots of time to blog and visit other blogs and chat, and sleep, and eat, and still get a ton of reading done.

Also, because I’ve been trying to be a better blogger and pay attention to stuff around the internet more, here are some linky-links you might wanna take a gander at:

Not much, but whatever. Soooo that’s my week! How has everyone else been?

Good morning guys!

Sarah update: Well, I had four days off of work, which was nice. I wasn’t very busy – did housework, shopped a bit, worked out, saw my big sis and my niece and nephew, etc. I’ve noticed that when I try to take a day JUST to relax and do nothing, I usually end up feeling indecisive and restless, because I feel like I should be doing something. Also, even on days like that, if it’s a weekday I have to go to the gym, which puts a damper on relaxing a bit. Gabby seemed pretty happy that I was home a lot though – I took time to hang out and read/blog/nap on the futon, and whenever I was there she was curled up with me.

Anyhoo, so my week was pretty lazy! This week won’t be – my little sis Amanda and L* are coming into town Monday night and spending the day here on Tuesday. Yayyy! Amanda NEVER has a day off, so it’s been ages since they’ve been here and I miss them. PLUS, she’s actually (finally!) considering moving back here. She’s only an hour and a half away, but it’s such a big difference and I hate the city she’s in. So I’ll be spending some time trying to help find a cheap apartment for her – I think the sooner we can find her possible apartments, the more likely it is that she will move back before the holidays. So, that’ll be my excitement for this week – and then Wednesday I’ll have the day to clean and hang out at home before going back to work.

On the weight loss front, it’s been a better week and as of this morning I’m down 13.6 lbs. I’m trying to get at least 3 days in of doing free weights, in addition to cardio at the gym. (Weights I do at home, it’s just easier.) Some of my jeans are getting a little noticeably looser – well, probably only noticeable to me, but still.

Oh, and in case you didn’t know, Cougar Town season 4 starts on January 8th. I CANNOT WAIT! They made a goofy video called “We’re Back” to announce it. (And look, I learned how to use GIFs!!! This seemed like a good pick for my first GIF in a blog post ever.)

Bookish update: Well, I finished The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde, which was a fun YA read. I’ve set The Casual Vacancy aside for now… which probably tells you all you need to know. I’m just not enjoying it right now. I have however started The Grapes of Wrath for Laura’s readalong, and it’s interesting… some chapters I hate, but some are kind of awesome, but I’m having fun thinking about it while I read. I think I’m going to go to B&N later today and buy my own copy. I wanted to underline something yesterday, but couldn’t cause it’s from the library.

Also, the Dewey’s 24-Hour readathon is next Saturday! And I don’t know how much I’ll be able to join in – I’m going to aim for at least my whole work shift (which means I’ll start reading before everyone else, but whatevs), but I might be talked into meeting Amanda and L that afternoon to go to a pumpkin patch… we’ll see. I was really looking forward to the readathon as an excuse to let the honeyman take care of dinner and to work on my pile of books to read.

Well that’s all the updating I have for now! Hope everyone has a lovely week :-)

* Amanda texted me that pic of L (in the photo collage) earlier this week. Look at those blue eyes!  What a cutie.

Thinking on Thursday… TV

Yeah, so it’s not a bookish-theme for today’s ToT… but whatever, I made up ToT anyways, so you know… I’ll do what I want.

So I’m sure you’ve all heard me whining about being so super-busy, and it’s TRUE. And next week is probably gonna be kinda busy too, but hopefully not as much. Things should calm down in the next few weeks… hopefully. Anyways.

I’m talking about TV today partly because when I’m super busy I 1) don’t have the time to read, sometimes for days at a time and 2) I’m so exhausted that if I do find a bit of spare time, I watch tv. I fell asleep on the couch the other day watching Friends re-runs, just a brief hour nap before having to get up and go out because it was game night. So, I’m sharing with you some of my favorite shows that are on tv now. If you have Hulu, you should take advantage and watch them. Also, this is my way of promoting my favorite shows so that they don’t get cancelled. You all know how much it hurts when awesome shows are cancelled, like Firefly or Pushing Daisies. So feel my pain and give these shows a try.

1. Cougar Town – OK if you are one of my blogging buddies, I am LITERALLY BEGGING YOU to try out the first season of Cougar Town. The show starts out being about Jules, newly divorced and in her 40′s. And by the end of season 1, it has totally evolved into an awesome show about a group of friends who drink together, play pranks, and is just AWESOME. The third season started on V-Day, and honestly, so far I’m not loving the 3rd season, but that’s because the season has been cut in half (13 episodes instead of 26, I believe), so some stuff is being rushed in case it’s not back for a 4th season. But if more people would give it a chance, I bet ABC wouldn’t cancel it. Even the honeyman watches it with me and finds it funny. I got my friend Doni into it, and she’s totally not a comedy-sitcom type of person. Please please please watch it? Also, see the title shot above? In the second season the creators started doing that every episode, because they really regret the title – it’d have such a bigger fan base if it wasn’t for such an unfortunate title. However, it’s been too long now and it’d be stupid of them to change it, so they mock it instead.

2. Whitney – Whitney is basically a sitcom based on and starring Whitney Cummings, and it’s SO FUNNY. I love mean, sarcastic humor and this is right up my alley. Whitney and her boyfriend Alex live together, and it’s basically a comedy about them and relationships in general. I laugh out loud A LOT. The show is still in the first season, so go on Hulu and watch a couple episodes. I’m definitely looking forward to buying it on DVD eventually.

3. Terra Nova – The first season ended in December, but it’s still on Hulu. And I know I keep blabbing about Hulu, but I think you can like watch 5 free episodes a week or something. I’ve manned up and gotten the $8 a month membership because there’s so many shows I wanted to be able to keep up with, and I don’t have DVR. Anyways, Fox is a bunch of bastards and STILL have not made a decision on whether or not to bring Terra Nova back for a second season, mainly because Fox hates anything sci-fi. It’s a GREAT show though. Basically in the future, we have completely effed up and the planet is dying and the air is so polluted we have to wear these mask thingys outside to even breathe the air. Scientists have discovered a rift in time-space that connects our world to a version of Earth 85 million years ago, and they’re sending groups of people back to set up a colony and essentially give humanity a second chance. And the show focuses on the Shannon family, and there’s dinosaurs and bad guys and evil plots and it was just SO GOOD. Also, there’s a little romance going on between teenagers Mark and Maddy, and I love love love them. And Fox has even said that the show was profitable for them, so I don’t know why they’re debating on whether or not to bring it back for season 2. Again, Fox sucks and they just hate sci-fi and anything that hints at rich people in power being evil.

Sooooo. Those are my big three. I love these shows and wish that more people knew about them and loved them as much as me. Also, I’m planning to jump on the Downton Abbey bandwagon soon, because I know everyone is head over heels in love with it. I bought the first season, so I’ll probably try it out in the next couple weeks when I’m at work.

OK, going to go attempt to read & relax now. Wish me luck…

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Want to Give People

Good morning everybody!!!! It’s Tuuuuesday! And you know what that means – Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. The Christmas season is upon us, and this week’s topic is Top Ten Books You Want to Give As Gifts – whether you’re able to or not.

1. It’s Called a Break-Up Because It’s Broken by Greg Behrendt – I was to give this to several women I know, including my little sister and maybe my mom. It’s just a fun, practical book that makes you feel a lot better about dumping some jerk, and helps you not to fall back into that trap.

2. The Postmortal by Drew Magary – This was one of my favorite reads of this year, but sadly I can only think of like maybe 1 or 2 people who MIGHT like it, so I probably won’t be spreading the joy of it yet.

3. The History of the Snowman by Bob Eckstein – I’m thinking of getting this for my friend Doni. She loves ALL things winter & Christmas. Also, this would be a really good Christmas / Hannukah / whatever gift for any one who likes history.

4. The Complete Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook: MAN SKILLS – This is a useful but hilarious book that I’ve actually bought to give to my little brother for Christmas. It includes practical information like how to hunt and set snares or how to survive a snakebite, as well has more humurous info like how to apologize when you haven’t done anything wrong, or how to prevent a hangover. I got this for my honeyman a while back and he really enjoys it, and even I like flipping through it at random.

5. Attachments by Rainbow Rowell – This is a really cute romantic story for the age of email. I’m thinking about getting it for our gaming friends Doni and Alan, because there’s several mentions of D&D gaming in the book and we game too (except we do Mythus, not D&D.)

6. Beauty Queens by Libba Bray – This book was HYSTERICALLY funny, but also really smart and sassy and feminist-y too. If I had a young teen niece or something, I’d totally get this for her. Sadly, I’ll have to wait like 10 more years at least to give it to my niece Emma.

… And that’s really all I can think of at the moment. Well no, I lie – there’s ONE other thing that I want to get like everyone I know because I love it, but it’s not a book, it’s a TV show:

That’s right. Cougar Town. Because it is HILARIOUS and I don’t want it to get cancelled, so part of me wants to  buy a ton of copies of Season 1 and just hand them out to people. Sadly I cannot, because I am not that rich. But if you don’t watch it, you should try it out. Even the honeyman likes it!

OK folks that’s all I got – I need to shower and get my butt to work. What do want to give as gifts this year?

Sarah Sunday!

look at my rings, my rings, my rings

Sarah update: SO this past week has been a big blur of working, socializing, reading, and shopping. I’ve been splurging a bit on myself… I got an awesome new purse in a bright royal blue, a gold/yellow pashmina, and a TON of stuff from Second Job. I bought some cute little underwear sets and some awesomely cozy Christmas pajamas, AND I got the giant turtle ring you see above. We sell these weird little animal rings at my store, and I kind of wanted a turtle one (knowing the honeyman loves them so much), but apparently we sold out ages ago. Well, I went to LB in a different mall, and THEY HAD THE TURTLE RINGS! For only 6 bucks! So yeah, it’s a giant-ass ring but I kinda love it, and actually got a bunch of compliments on it when I wore it the other day.

Also, it makes me sing this little song:

Yeah, I’m definitely in a chunky ring phase.

Anyways… I think I’ve been on such a clothing splurge because now that it’s November, I can’t buy myself any books, movies, games, etc. Which sucks cause there are a whole bunch of things coming out this month that I can’t wait to get my hands on. Darn Christmas and all it’s wonderfulness.

Anyways, I did get a lot of socializing time in this week. Treland & I had a game night with Steph & her bf, we had our regular Modern Warfare game night with Doni & Alan, I got to hang out with my older sis Heather, and I even got to chill with my momma. Actually, my mom came to see me at Second Job one day and she bought some stuff for herself, and then when I got out we went and had lunch together. It has been YEARS since I got to just go out for lunch with my mom. She’s kind of starting to go through a bit of break-up, and now that she’s not stuck hanging out with him anymore, she can actually go out and enjoy herself without feeling like he had to tag along. It’s a long, frustrating story but to sum up – my mom seems a lot happier, and it’s awesome that I get to spend more mother-daughter time with her.

Also, I am SO ADDICTED to Pinterest. So come check me out and contact me on there, I like looking at other people’s boards. I am obsessed, and luckily work hasn’t blocked it yet. So that’s a good time killer right there :-)

This coming week kind of sucks… I work every single day this week. I’m covering a shift at First Job for someone on Monday, I have Second Job on Tuesday and Wednesday, and then it’s First Job again all the way up until next Monday. I definitely can’t wait until this week is over. I’ll barely have time to do chores and such. But at least I’ll be making some extra money to make up for my little shopping spree this week. And I’m actually thinking up some awesome Christmas gift ideas, so I’ll be ready when I get these good checks.

Anyways, that’s been about it.

Bookish update: I spent all week reading Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke, and I finally finished it today when I was at work. I’m writing the review tonight. And I’m SO looking forward to reading a bunch of other stuff now. I’ll be reading A Visit From the Goon Squad (the November poll winner) next, and then I’m itching to start Domestic Violets – which was also on the poll for this month and didn’t win, but I really want to read it. Also, Crossed by Ally Condie should be in from the library soon (my only way of getting around this pesky no-book-buying thing). I’m thinking this should be a good reading month, despite my busy-ness. There’s so much I’m looking forward to reading!

So…. that’s about it. Now I need to go write that review and get my butt to bed, cause I have to wake up in 6 hours. Oy.

~Sarah
