Classics Club January Question

classics club

How exciting, my first Classics Club meme!

Here’s the question for this month:

What is the best book you’ve read so far for The Classics Club — and why? Be sure to link to the post where you discussed the book! (Or, if you prefer, what is your least favorite read so far for the club, and why?)

around the world in eighty days

Well, this is going to be pretty easy, because I just joined on January 1st and I’ve only read one classic off of my list so far! Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne was the book, and it was really fun and enjoyable.

Since that’s a super short and easy answer, I’m going to list a couple of the books that I’m looking forward to the most and hence my read next…

  • The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury
  • Mansfield Park by Jane Austen
  • The Three Musketeers OR The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

I can’t wait to get more books on my list read! What’s the favorite Classics Club book you’ve read so far?

Bout of Books Readathon 6.0 MASTER POST

bout of books

Bout of Books 6.0 is finally here!

cougar town

In case you’re wondering what Bout of Books is, here is the OFFICIAL BLURB from the Bout of Books website:

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and
Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins
12:01am Monday, January 7th and runs through Sunday, January 13th in whatever
time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading
competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There
are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely
optional. For all Bout of Books 6.0 information and updates, be sure to visit
the Bout of Books blog
. -From the Bout of Books 6.0 team

So this is going to be my master post, with my goals and my daily updates. It’ll be a sticky post for the duration of the week, so it’ll be right at the top of my blog all week, but it also means I won’t be overcrowding your readers with constant posts. Let’s get to the goals, shall we?

Books

BAM.

I don’t actually think I’ll be able to read ALL of these, per se, but I think I can read most of them if I focus this week.

THE BOOKS

  • Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne
  • The Stand by Stephen King
  • Hyperspace by Michio Kaku
  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling (Read the 1st half for the readalong.)
  • Blackberry Winter by Sarah Jio
  • The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides
  • Between Shades of Grey by Ruta Sepetys
  • The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker

MY GOALS

  • Finish Hyperspace, which I’m already about halfway through.
  • Read the 1st half of the HP books for a readalong I’m doing.
  • I’d like to be able to cross at least 4 books off of my list above.
  • Read roughly 200 pages per day, for a total of 1400 pages by the end.
  • Visit and comment on other blogs, at least once or twice a day.
  • Take part in at least one Twitter chat (@SarahSaysRead is my Twitter handle).
  • HAVE FUN! :-)

THE WRAP-UP

  • Finished Hyperspace, The Age of Miracles, and Between Shades of Gray
  • Read 1st half of Harry Potter #1, and 3/4 of Around the World in Eighty Days.
  • Total pages read – 1084, so I missed my goal of 1400 pages :-(
  • Did okay with commenting and visiting other blogs, but not great.
  • Missed ALL of the Twitter chats, which sucked.

Although I’m disappointed that I didn’t meet my page goal, this was still an awesome reading week for me and helped me get ahead for the year! I think things would have gone differently if I hadn’t been quite so busy, and then if I hadn’t gotten sick over the weekend. I’m a wuss when I’m sick, I can’t focus on reading or computer stuff or anything.

Can’t wait until the next Bout of Books! And thank you SO MUCH to the lovely people who put it all together!

Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Things I Love

Good morning ya’ll! So first thing’s first – if you live in the US, hopefully you’re registered to vote and if you are – get out there and vote! Don’t forget, and don’t be so lazy that you decide not to go. It’s important!

Anyhoo, so today’s Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by The Broke and The Bookish) is a freebie! So, I’m just going to list some of the bookish things / stuff that makes me happy inside.

1. Claire’s ring – I have this replica of Claire’s ring (from the Outlander series) – the honeyman got it for me for our first Christmas together :-) It’s my absolute favorite piece of jewelry. And the website that it comes from, The Author’s Attic, makes a lot of jewelry for fans of Diana Gabaldon, Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, and more.

2. Bookstores – I loooove going into bookstores. Sadly there’s really only one left in my town, but I would go there every day if I could. And whenever people with e-readers mention how e-readers are great because you can just buy a book on the couch instead of having to drive to the bookstore, I’m so confused. Going to the bookstore to buy a book is one of the best things ever!

3. Pinterest – Not specifically bookish itself, but it’s enabled me to hoard bookish pictures, ideas, and quotes like nobody’s business (plus some reviews here and there, which I really need to get better at updating).

5. The library embosser my sister Heather got me for Christmas last year! It’s SO AWESOME to be able to emboss the inside pages of my favorite books :-) Can you tell that Heather is like a gift-giving genius???

6. Twitter - Again, not inherently bookish. But it enables you to chat with your favorite authors! And book bloggers!

7. Readalongs and readathons – These are two big things in the book blogging world, and they’re everything that I love about our community- there’s such a sense of camaraderie during readathons, as we all struggle to stay awake while we read together and join in on challenges, etc. And readalongs are SO awesome for reading books you normally might not have read otherwise, while getting to chat about it every week with AMAZING people!

9. Any bookish GIF. Cause they’re fun!

9. This shirt – I actually just bought this at Target, either to sleep in or to work out in. Yay Seuss!

10. MY books – Obviously. I could literally sit in my spare room with the futon and four big bookshelves all day and be totally happy.

Mini-Readathon Challenge #3!

ALRIGHTY, third mini-challenge! Only 4 more hours left! Well, at least for me.

So, I haven’t made a TON of progress since the last post, since I had to drive home and then my friend came over and we made snacks, and then we talked about books of course, and so on… But we’re reading now! I’m still working on The Book of Tomorrow, but I may take a break soon and switch to something else soon.

This mini-challenge is again, very simple. Take a picture of something related to your readathon-ing – who (if anyone) you’re reading with, food, where you’re reading, what you’re reading, etc. Then post it on your blog (or tweet it or something) and post the link in the comments below.

image

This is Gabby, one of my reading partners today :-) Bet you saw that coming, didn’t you? LOL

So, there you have it! I’ll be back in another 4 hours for the last post! Holy crap this day is flying by! Hope you guys are having fun!

I’m gonna go try to focus on reading now… *hangs head in shame*

Sarah Sunday!

Lunch, Instagram for Android

Thank you Instagram for making my food look so much cooler than it would in a normal picture.

Sarah update:  Hey guys! It’s been a good week. Had my last day working at Lane Bryant (I’ll miss the discount), celebrated my friend Doni’s birthday, and generally relaxed and stayed at home. Worked on Friday and Saturday and today. The readathon was yesterday morning to this morning, and I participated as much as I could.

I think I’m FINALLY over my flu or cold or whatever it was. It lasted like a week and a half, and I still have a cough sometimes, but I think overall I’m pretty healed. I’m hoping to get some time this week to kind of build myself back up because I think I’m still a little weak from being sick and trying to rest a lot. I need to take some walks or something. Hopefully the weather holds up for that. I’m also hoping to get a lot of reading time at home this week, and MAYBE a little bit of socializing. Maybe.

Oh, and I now have Instagram on my phone! I was happy it finally came out for Android, but I almost didn’t download it because I’m annoyed that Facebook bought it. But, it’s fun and kind of addicting. Instagram and the WordPress app both saved my ass during this readathon, it made updating from work so much easier.

Oh and I bought the new Jason Mraz cd that came out on Tuesday, Love. I haven’t gotten a chance to listen to it yet, but I’m excited.

my books, currently reading

Bookish update: Well, I managed to finish two books – If You Ask Me (And Of Course You Won’t) by Betty White, and Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan. I already started working on the reviews, so those should be up within the next couple of days.

I’m still re-reading The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon, but I only have 180 pages left and I’m hoping to finish it today. I started Physics of the Future by Michio Kaku yesterday during the readathon, so I’m going to continue to read that as well because it’s VERY interesting. And I’m hoping that after finishing one or both of these books that I’ll be able to start Sacre Bleu by Christopher Moore next.

Friday was a very happy night for me because I did some book shopping – I went into the store saying I would only buy two, and came out with four! :-) I’m kind of lazy right now, but they’ll be in the IMM for April. I also ordered a couple of books that became available from my Paperbackswap wishlist. Can’t wait till they get here!

Oh, and this week I’m also hoping to finally finish scanning / logging all of my books, and then I’ll be coming here to show off pictures of my bookshelves and go on and on about how awesome the Book Catalogue app is.

Anyways, I think that’s all the updating I have for today. Hope everyone is having a great Sunday, and getting lots of rest if you just finished the readathon!

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I’d Save if My Apartment Was on Fire

Because, living in an apartment complex that really seems like the biggest danger to my books. So it’s time for Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by The Broke and The Bookish! This is going to be a super-short one for me, for a couple reasons including the fact that I’m insanely busy today. This week’s topic is Top Ten Books I’d Save If My House Was Going to Be Abducted by Aliens... I see no reason why aliens should want to keep me from reading, which is why I went with a slightly less weird natural disaster…

So, in all honesty, as much as I love my books… most of them are easily replaceable. Sure, it’d be expensive, but who doesn’t love book shopping? So, this list is really only three items long…

1. My mass market collection of the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon - Yes, yes, I have an Outlander obsession. However, I specifically would want to save the mass markets because the honeyman bought books 2-7 for me as I read them. I already owned the first book, but he’s the one that finally convinced me to get around to reading it, and then he bought me each book as I read them. So, this pick is really 7 books long, but it seemed silly to list each one individually…

2. My Bibles - So, I’m an athiest, more or less. However, I have numerous religious texts because I like to have them around in case I need to look up a reference or something, and this includes two Bibles – a small brown leather one that was my dad’s when he was a kid, and a multi-colored one from my mom. She gave my siblings and I each a copy when we were kids and she was sick and we didn’t get to see her a lot. Funny enough, my mother isn’t really even remotely religious though she was raised Protestant, and my father was raised as a Christian but… well, he is the epitome of everything NOT-Christian. However, the fact that both parents gave them to me makes them kind of special, and I’m sure was a small way of them trying to look out for me when I was a kid. Or they thought something was seriously wrong with me and only religion could be the answer.

3. The laptop - Yeah, I know, this isn’t a book. But the honeyman’s laptop has my Microsoft Database file on it that contains the info for EVERY BOOK I OWN – title, author, ISBN, publisher, where I bought it, how much I paid, the list price, etc… When we eventually get renter’s insurance, this thing is going to come VERY in proving the value of my books, plus I’ll be able to know exactly what I owned and need to replace.

Also, I know it’d be easier to just save the file on a flashdrive and put it in the little safe we have, but with how often I add books to it, there’d be little point. I’d have to get my safe key, open the safe, take out the flash drive, put it in the computer, update it, take it out, put it back in the safe, lock it up again… see, it’s even too much trouble just writing it out. I couldn’t do that crap on a semi-weekly basis.

So, that’s my list! Of course there are hundreds of other books that I own and love dearly, but those are really the ones that seem most important and irreplaceable. I would have thought my list would be a mile long, but it appears that just the thought of re-buying all of those books is enough to make me okay with potentially losing them. Easy-peasy.

What books would you save from aliens / fire / flood / stampede /etc ?

Tag! Tag! Tag! You’re IT!

Most annoying title I think I’ve ever come up with.

So, I finally sit down to get some bloggin / commentin done, and what happens is that I stumble upon Alley’s post at What Red Read, in which she tagged me. And because I admit that writing posts is more fun than going through my Google Reader, I figured why not.

So, here we shall go.

What to do

1. Post rules.
2. Post 11 fun facts about yourself.
3. Answer questions from the person who tagged you.
4. Make up 11 questions for people you tag.
5. Tag 11 people. (Yeah I’m not tagging 11 people.)
6. Let them know they’ve been tagged. (I’m also not bothering to do this… if you see the post and see that you’ve been tagged, cool. Feel free to participate or not.)

11 Fun Facts About Sarah

1. I went to a Catholic school up until 8th grade. I’m an atheist. Even as a kid, I used to argue with the teacher in Religion Class. For some reason though, all the teachers really liked me. I even stabbed a boy with a pencil once (he had it coming, and I warned him), and they still liked me. I didn’t even get in trouble. Yay!

2. The honeyman actually met in 9th grade, when we were what… 14-ish? I thought he always looked really sad and tried to cheer him up, which made him feel really annoyed and he hated me. We lost touch, started chatting again when we were 20, and BAM! started dating. Aww.

3. I dropped out of school in the beginning of my junior year. I went to some “alternative” hippie high school, which basically meant that when I started to skip class and stuff, I never got in trouble… and yeah. I eventually decided that I wasn’t learning anything and dropped out. I got my GED when I was like 21 or 22 because I was worried I wouldn’t get this job I wanted if I didn’t have it.

4. I was an assistant manager at Waldenbooks when it closed, and I was on unemployment for 6 months. That was the best summer ever – and it was when I ran into the honeyman and we started dating. It’s also when I realized that I don’t want to work, I’d rather be a housewife (no kids). You know, have a house, a garden, some dogs, etc. The honeyman supports me in this. I can’t wait.

5. I used to want to be a singer when I was little. I spent hours singing along to Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera in my bedroom. I’m sure this annoyed my family to no end.

6. I really hate turning left out onto a busy street, like from a parking lot or gas station where there’s no light. There are some streets that I just will not turn left onto. I often plan my routes on whether or not I’ll have to turn left… I’m like Zoolander, but in a car.

7. I hate almost anything athletic. In middle school, I always came up with some excuse and just sat there during gym. I’m just too self-conscious for sports. I have to get tipsy just to go bowling. I like walking… and probably would like hiking. I’ve never seriously hiked before, so I’m not sure.

8. I love movies / stories about omnipotent characters. Like the Phoenix in X-Men, or those weird creepy kids in that new movie Chronicle. I’d love to be that super bad-ass and powerful. It’s weird that I didn’t read comics as a kid… and I feel like I’m too old to really get into them now.

9. I don’t want to live past like 75. I hate old people, and I have a huge fear of being old and invalid.

10. When I was about 10, I tricked my little sister. I told her that in order to turn 7 years old, she had to drink this disgusting mixture – I put mustard, chocolate syrup, ketchup, pickle juice, and basically any other liquid I could find in the fridge into a glass. She took one sip and puked all over the place. It still makes me laugh :-)

11. I’ve never broken a bone. I know this isn’t a fun fact, but dude… it’s hard to think up this many fun facts about myself. I lead a boring life.

Questions from Alley

1. What’s your favorite bookish movie? (Movie based on a book, movie with literary tendencies, whatever) Ummmm… Wuthering Heights, the one with Tom Hardy in it. Love that movie, I need to re-watch it soon.

2. How often do you re-read books? Not often enough. I’m still in the middle of re-reading the Outlander series.
3. What’s your favorite reading spot? Hmmm… probably in the spare room. All my books are in there, there’s lots of light, there’s a futon and an end table. It’s awesome.
4. Which season is your favorite? Spring. I like seeing all the little green buds on the trees. That’s my favorite time of year.

5. What’s your profile picture? I’d have to look to be sure, but I think it’s my on our couch smiling like an idiot.

10. If you like to cook (or bake), what’s your favorite thing to make? Hmmm… good question! I like making chicken pot pie… It’s a lot of work with the pre-cooking the chicken, chopping a bunch of vegetables, etc. but I think that’s why I like it. I like spending a good hour or so putting it all together. Plus it’s the honeyman’s favorite, and I like hearing him tell me how good it is.

11. Do you have a big TBR list? Or do you wait until you’re done with your current book to buy (or borrow from the library) your next reads? GIANT. I have almost 900 books, and I still have to read over half of them. Someday…

Thinking on Thursday… LITERARY TATTOOS

So I was actually going to write a post about the whole “Franzen hates e-books” thing, but I decided that wasn’t really worth the post. I mainly would have been saying “dude has a point”, but ya’ll know my anti-ereader sentiments already, so ehhh. I’m too lazy to go through it right now.

INSTEAD, let’s talk about something definitely on my mind this morning – Tattoos! I don’t love ALL tattoos - I prefer my tattoos to be small and pretty, but who in the book blogging world doesn’t love literary tattoos?

Now, I’m purposely saying “literary tattoos” instead of “bookish tattoos”, because I think literary covers a broader scope – any quotes, the alphabet, common phrases, pictures of authors/book/book scenes, etc.

I have two tattoos right now, (one more literary than the other) and I’m craving a third one… and since my birthday is next month, tht might just happen. But first, the ones I currently have:

“Live Laugh Love” circled around my left wrist. And yeah, I know LLL is kind of cliched, but I love it. It reminds me to be happy and enjoy life, even when stuff sucks. Also, I’ve realized I take very few pictires with my wrist in the shot, lol. This was from about 2 years ago and the clearest picture I could find right now.

“I’d rather be reading.” scrawled across the top of my right foot. I had trouble deciding exactly how to express my love of reading and books, without choosing a long-ass quote or getting a picture of a stack of books, which would be ugly and boring. I think this came out awesome, and since I got in October right before it got cold out, I’m really looking forward to flip-flop weather.

I want another tattoo, but I take my time in deciding. I mean, it’s permanent! Which is why I’m hesitant to get a direct quote from a book tattooed on me, cause what if I end up hating that book later on in life? Or, quotes that I like seem too long and since I don’t like big tats, that cancels those out.

You guys know how much I love Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, so of course I want an Outlander-themed tattoo. I have several pieces of Outlander jewelry thanks to the honeyman (seriously, I love that man), including the ring below. I want to get that thistle Celtic pattern tattooed on me, perhaps added to the Live Laugh Love tattoo around my wrist. It would be an awesome way to pay tribute to my favorite series, without having to pick a quote or something. I’ve actually already had my sister draw up the pattern on paper for me, so maybe this will be the one I get next…

There’s one quote from a song that I’ve really been wanting, but I’m not sure where I would put it, or how small I could make it… “This life is temporary but the soul is eternal” from the song Thieves in the Night by Mos Def and Talib Kweli. It’s not bookish, but it’s words, so it counts as literary… right? Along the same lines, I’d really love to get the infinity symbol tattooed, and I’m thinking of maybe doing it in white ink… I’m not sure yet.

ANYHOO, literary tattoos are fun! And meaningful to bookish folk like ourselves. I love looking at them online, and probably my favorite site is The Word Made Flesh. I could scroll through that site forever.

So, what do you think of literary tattoos?

Is there any book, quote, or author that you’d be willing to get tattooed on yourself?

Do you have any already?

Or are you thinking of getting any?

And would you please leave links to your literary tattoos in the comments? I’ve love to see them.

Winter Mini-Readathon Mini-Challenge #3!

So, how’s everyone holding up? It’s officially the halfway point!

Sadly, I have no real updates. Somehow I got no reading done during the last 3 hours… I made my sister watch some funny songs on YouTube (I’m On a Boat & I’m Awesome, in cause you were wondering), we did her bonus challenge post, made some cucumber sandwiches, made more coffee, chatted, etc… This is what happens when you have two sisters who don’t get to hang out enough, and throw them together all day with food and drinks.

Anyhoo, on with the next challenge! The challenge is to use random objects around your house to spell out the word “read”, take a picture of it, post it on your blog, and then come back here to leave the link in the comments!

Here is mine…

We’re not alcoholics, I swear. The honeyman doesn’t even drink, lol, but he had all of his friends save bottlecaps for him for some game he wants to play. Lucky for me, they made this challenge easy-peasy :-) But you can use ANY OBJECTS around your house.

See you in 3 hours, when Jenn will be hosting a mini-challenge!

Winter Mini-Readathon Challenge #2!

Hey guys, how ya doin? I’ve have a good 3 hours so far… Heather and I sat and updated my header (LOVE the V-Day theme), I started my chicken in the crockpot for chicken tacos, made some jalapeno poppers, and read 66 pages of my first book, Hominds by Robert J. Sawyer.

So, the 2nd challenge! The image you see above is a Wordle, and your challenge is to make your own and post it on your blog! Here’s how…

1. Go to http://www.wordle.net/ and click the Create button.

2. Type in a bunch of words related to the mini-readathon! Can be anything bookish, the snacks you’re having, the books in your to-read pile, anything really. A couple notes about using Wordle…

  • To make a word appear in a large font, type it several times. So to get “Mini-Readathon” to look so big up there, I typed it 3 times.
  • To get words to stay together, say for a title of a book, put a ~ between the words. So for “The Warded Man” above, I typed: The~Warded~Man
  • The more words, the better. It’ll look full and pretty.

3. After you type in all your words, be sure that that’s all (I don’t think you can go back to add more), and click the Go button. From there, you can change the layout, colors, font, etc to get it to look how you want.

4. I don’t think you can right click on the image to save it. My laptop has a feature called “Snipping Tool” that I use to take a cropped screenshot and save it to my pictures. Otherwise, you can probably use just a regular screenshot and then save it.

The post your Wordle on your blog, and come back to this post and leave a comment with the link to your Wordle post.

I’ve been very excited to do this mini-challenge, can’t wait to see the Wordles you guys make!!

~Sarah
