Good morning guys! It’s Tuesday! Which means it’s game night, but also that it’s time for Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. This week’s topic is Top Ten Bookish Confessions. Should be fun
Let’s get to it!
1. I am the WORST at reading the books I check out of the library. Unless of course it’s something I’m absolutely dying to read, in which case I usually just go buy it. At least 70% of the books I check out these days go back unread.
2. Also, I’m pretty bad at returning stuff on time. But I never mind paying the fines, cause you know, it goes towards the library. And I love the library.
3. I TECHNICALLY did not finish Jane Eyre. I read like 2/3 of it and just couldn’t take it anymore, so I skimmed up until the last couple chapters. Blech.
4. I write / highlight in my books. I use post-its too, but I’m not too shy about underlining a good quote unless it’s relatively new and expensive. Classics and non-fiction get written in the most.
5. I believe there ARE some movies that are better than the book. The Time Traveler’s Wife, for instance. Or Marley & Me.
6. I’ve thrown books out before. *Hangs head in shame* They were sitting around forever, I never got around to bringing them to Goodwill, and I got in one of my “get rid of all the clutter” moods. I cringe thinking about it.
7. As much as I’ve always loved reading, I avoided basically ALL literature classes in college. Partly because back then I wasn’t much interested in reading classics, and partly because I didn’t want a teacher telling me how to read or analyzing the crap out of books.
8. I don’t even have much interest in Goodreads anymore. I used to really miss it, but I didn’t get on there much because it was blocked at work and when I’m at home I’m doing other stuff. But now I just hear so much drama coming out of it that I’m kind of glad I haven’t used it in ages.
9. I’m really hoping that at least one of my nieces/nephews grows up to be a big reader. I need more people in my life to talk about books with!
10. I bring books into the bathtub with me all the time. And I haven’t yet dropped on in the water. (Knock on wood.) Of course, this isn’t really a confession… more like an accomplishment
So, what are some of your bookish confessions or quirks?
~Sarah

I think The Time Traveler’s Wife movie was better than the book, too.
It so was. The movie was sweet. The book was a lot darker and hipster-ish. Ugh.
I’m impressed that you’re able to read in the tub and haven’t lost any books that way! I’m too clumsy to even risk attempting it.
It takes skill, yo. And YEARS of practice.
I’m good at returning books on time — the odd time I’ve been a day or two late — but I’m terrible at getting most of my books read. I think my worst problem is requesting TOO MANY books from the library. That combined with buying too many books and I get antsy on what to read.
Marley & Me was WAY better than the book … I hated the book! Though both mediums are basically, “Hey! This is how NOT to raise a dog!” The movie’s funny, but as a dog owner, I just shake my head.
I’ve thrown some books out before … painfully OLD books that I don’t like and ARCs. Though, usually I’ll toss books in a bag for the library and donate them there. If they can’t use them, they’ll go in the library sale, so that’s good enough for me.
I took ALL the reading classes in university! And I loved classic literature back then! These days, I find myself BUYING a lot of these books, but having no interest in reading them. This is why I need to stop buying so many books!
Thanks for sharing, Sarah!
I’m probably guilty of buying a lot of classics and then never reading them too. I have two shelf-fuls, and I just never get around to reading so many of them. Tsk tsk.
*GASP* at throwing books away! Naughty Sarah! And also, awww, poor Jane Eyre… Guess you help to prove the Jane Eyre OR Wuthering Heights rule though
I know, I suck.
And Wuthering Heights totally kicks Jane Eyre’s ass. Just sayin’.
If I had a bathtub I wasn’t scared to be in, I’d totally read in there. Can’t wait to move, lol. Props for not dropping them! Here’s Ours
Aww why are you scared of your tub? (LOL weird question.) Is it one of those old foot tubs? I had one of those in my last apartment and I hated it, I NEVER read or took baths in that thing cause I felt like I could never get it and the area behind it clean enough.
You know my kids will be readers, if I have anything to say about it. Josh is already pretty good about it and Emma can already read some at 4 yo, so I’m guessing that’s a good start. LOL
Ik, very true. Although if I had to pick one, I’m just guessing Emma might be the reader. Just cause girls usually read more than guys (stereotypically anyways).
Goodreads drama? Makes me glad I pretty much *only* use Goodreads to keep track of my books–what I’ve read, what I’m reading, and what I have yet to read. I don’t participate on any of the forums, and I only review the books that I found to be REALLY good or REALLY bad or have some interesting quality about them. So 95% of the books don’t get reviewed.
It was nice to keep track of what I’ve read via Goodreads, but I got lazy about signing on. Instead I just keep an excel file of what I read each year.
Your #1 was on my list too because I usually check out way more than I read. But I think it’s okay because it helps your library’s circulation stats!
And why was Goodreads blocked at your work? It’s not a “bad” site although I guess if they know you’re a reader it can be really distracting and time-wasting!
I think that because of the forums, they considered it a social-networking site. Which SUCKS, but it also kind of true, lol.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who’s thrown books out! I did it once and I felt SO BAD about it even if the book was plain awful!
I don’t use the library anymore cause the same thing would happen to me! Also, the libraries here kinda suck. But I’m horrible at returning stuff on time and just buying the books is easier.
You write in your books? *whines*
I LOVED both those books hardcore. I refuse to see Time Traveler’s Wife b/c I loved the book so much. But now…NOW I HAVE TO. lol
You may not like the TTTW movie then. Its a lot sweeter & sugar-coated than the book. I also have fond memories cause it was the 1st movie I ever went to see by myself
I love your list! I do the same thing with the library books. It’s hard to resist! They’re free! Lol
So true. But I’m sooooo lazzzyyyyy about getting around to reading them, lol. And about taking them back on time… I used to go to the library every week, but my schedule is all wonky. Need to get back to a routine.
I’m not much for classics either and I LOVE reading books in the bathtub. I haven’t dropped one in yet either. I love to relax when i read and when I’m naked, no one can bug me.
See, reading books in the bathtub isn’t hard! People are such wusses. Unless they only use e-readers, cause I can kind of understand not wanting to risk dropping that in the water.
You threw books away?! That is a true confession. I can’t even comprehend such a thing.
I take books out to our hot tub all the time and I still haven’t dropped one in
I’m still ashamed of throwing out books
