My Big-Ass To Read Shelf

>So, inspired today by this fellow blogger’s post, I decided to see how many books I’ve read, of the books I already own… It’s kind of embarassing. Let’s proceed, shall we?

This is all in our spare room by the way. I started at the bookshelf to the left of the door when you walk in and went clockwise around the room.

This is Bookshelf #1. Total books: 197. Books read: 49. Not off to a great start…

Bookshelf #2. Total books: 178. Books read: 52. Very slightly better.

Bookshelf #3. Total books: 169. Books read: 112. MUCH better. This happens to be where I keep some of my favorites… fave books on the top shelf, some favorite authors or series on the second and third, etc…

Bookshelf #4. Total books: 225. Books read: 53. Ouch. And yes that box to the left is one I STILL haven’t unpacked since we moved in October.

Showing my work… lol. The notes on the side show that I only counted “readable” books. So I didn’t include old school texts, cookbooks, Cliff’s Notes, religious texts, etc…
Grand total: Out of 769 “readable” books, I’ve only read 266. Roughly 35%.

And that doesn’t count this secret little to-be-logged-and-shelved pile right here…

It looks like books such as romance, non-fiction, and poetry are really what hurt my totals… that’s what’s on bookshelf #4 for the most part. I have some fave romance authors, so I’ve been buying their books used when I see them but not getting around to them yet. And I have ridiculous curiousity, hence a ton of non-fiction, but haven’t gotten around to a bunch of those yet. And anthologies and poetry I can read cover-to-cover, but I usually read them more in a browsing kind of way.

I’m hoping March will be a big “catching up” month for me, because I have a bajillion that I want to read right now, including some from the library. After I can clear the library pile a bit, I want to try to focus more on reading from my own shelves. I’d be happier if the percentage was closer to 50… But I’m not gonna stop buying books. I’m not even gonna pretend to restrain myself. So whenever you’re feeling guilty about your to-read piles, just remember mine :o )

  1. >That is A LOT of books! At least you never have to worry about having nothing to read! :)

  2. >Oh gosh, you really do make me feel better about mine! Can I show this to my boyfriend when he complains I buy too many books? ;)

  3. >Don't think about it as being shameful – think about it as being awesome, because you are book-rich. :)

  4. >Your bookshelves look like mine! I'll have to do that counting thing one of these days. I'm a bit afraid of what my % might be!~Brooke

  5. >OH DAMN YOU SURE DO HAVE ALOT TO GO WOW!!!lol

  6. >Oh my! I almost drooled on my keyboard looking at these photos :D I don't have a big TBR pile by your standards but my TBR wish list is probably in the 1000s. I must have a shred of willpower after all :D

  7. >Ok. I am so using your site against any argument my boyfriend ever presents about my growing book collection. Thanks! Haha. Looks like you have plenty of reading material !

  8. >Yikes, I'm scared to do that here!!

  9. >wow, thank you for helping me in my argument with my husband that I DO NOT have too many books on my 'unread' shelf (currently at 107 and growing every week)! I'm excited for you about how many books you have to read, it's like having your own personal bookshop at your fingertips :-)

  10. >I've just shown your bookshelves to my boyfriend. He complains about the amount of books I've got and have not read. I would say I've read about 75% of my books but I've not got as many as you! It made me feel better seeing yours though! hehe x

  11. >Don't feel too bad, I'm even worse lol.

  12. >Well, I sure feel better about the piles of unread books on my shelves now! Your honeyman is certainly a nice guy to let you devote almost an entire room to bookshelves!
