#BOUTOFBOOKS 20 Master Post

It’s Bout of Books time! Bout of Books is a week-long, no-pressure readathon internet party and you can still sign up here. This is going to be a sticky post where I update everyday, plus I’ll be all over Twitter, Instagram, Litsy, and Snapchat – SarahSaysRead is my user name on everything. If you have questions about Bout of Books, please feel free to ask me – since I’ve done it a ton of times I’ve been dubbed an Expert, so I’m here to help you out and cheer you along!

I’m doing something a little different this time, in that I’m “reading for charity”. I’m going to donate 5 cents for every page I read, and 50 cents for every comic I read. The money is going to be split because I couldn’t decide, so 50% will go to a local classroom and 50% will go to We Need Diverse Books. This is not a BoB requirement by any means, I just thought it’d be cool to do on my own. If I had planned it better I would’ve had people “sponsor” my reading for donations but I literally decided to do this like 3 days ago, so.

Now to the super fun part!

THE BOOKS

  • The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin (Kindle)
  • Let Us Dream by Alyssa Cole (Kindle)
  • Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
  • The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin
  • The Entropy of Bones by Ayize Jama-Everett
  • Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor
  • America #3-5
  • Ms. Marvel #20-21
  • Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #18-21
  • Bitch Planet Triple Feature #1-2
  • The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #22-23

THE GOALS

  • Finish at least 2 books
  • Read at least 700 pages
  • Read at least 10 comics
  • Join in on at least 1 Twitter chat
  • Socialize on social media a bunch
  • Do at least one mini-challenge
  • Have fun!

THE UPDATES – (I’m using a slightly modified version of the Bout of Books template)

Monday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 75
Total number of books I’ve read: 0
Books I read from: Their Eyes Were Watching God & The Entropy of Bones
#todayinsixwords: Distracted but not a bad start!

I read before work, read on my lunch at work, and then got home and it all went downhill from there. My mom stopped by, then the husband got home from the gym, then we had to eat dinner… I read for a bit before the Twitter chat at least. (And the chat was a blast, as usual!)

Tuesday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 84
Total number of books I’ve read: 0
Books I read from: Their Eyes Were Watching God & The Entropy of Bones
#todayinsixwords: Reading before work is going well.

For BoB, I’ve been waking up like 15 minutes earlier, showering, and then sitting in my bathrobe with some coffee and reading for 25-30 minutes before I get dressed and go on with my day. I might try to keep this up even after BoB, because it’s a nice, quiet way to start my morning. On a separate note, I have family in town (kind of a surprise) so it through me off yesterday evening.

Was already tired and then had to go to a friend’s house after work and was there much later than intended. I’m beat today.

Number of pages I’ve read today: 0
Total number of books I’ve read: 0
Books I read from: *sob*
#todayinsixwords: So exhausted, busy, tired… I don’t even have six words.

I stayed up too late several days in a row and it caught up with me, plus work was so busy I didn’t even take a lunch. But that’s okay, because I’m using a vacation day today (Friday) and I’m going to read my ass off.

Friday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 148
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: The Entropy of Bones and Their Eyes Were Watching God
#todayinsixwords: So glad I used vacation day.

I used a vacation day on Friday so I could stay home and read. Sadly, the day flew by but I did get to read outside in the sun for a bit. Then friends came over for game night, but now I have all weekend to read more!

Friday

Saturday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 167
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: The Fifth Season
#todayinsixwords: Why am I so dang tired?

I started The Fifth Season and read a big chunk of it throughout the day, but I was sleepy ALL DAY. Also, my nephew came over to stay the night so that sucked up some time and energy later on.

Sunday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 150
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: The Fifth Season
#todayinsixwords: Trying to read while avoiding nephew.

JK I love my nephew, but also yeah I definitely tried to keep him occupied with TV and video games while I read. That plan kind of fell apart later in the day when my mom came over too and I had to cook dinner and stuff. On the plus side I’m over 60% into The Fifth Season and it’s awesome!

Sunday

WRAP-UP

  • 2 books finished: The Entropy of Bones and Their Eyes Were Watching Good
  • 2 comics read: Ms. Marvel #20-21
  • 674 pages read (dang, so close to my goal of 700)
  • I did the Saturday Twitter chat which was awesome, but in general I didn’t get to socialize around online as much as I was hoping. I’m really psyched I got so far into The Fifth Season,

Okay, so at 5 cents per page and 50 cents per comic, that’s $34.70 (rounding to $36) that I’m donating! $18 to We Need Diverse Books and $18 to a local classroom. Receipts:

I hope everyone had a blast this week! I love Bout of Books because I feel like I made SO much progress reading in just one week. How did you do?

CHALLENGES

Bookish Survey challenge, hosted by Writing My Own Fairy Tale

1. How do you organize your shelves? They’re kind of spread out, but I have a whole bookshelf of just favorites and comics, and then classics, non-fiction, romance, poetry, general fiction, and then other shelves that are just series or all mass markets, etc. It’ll be more organized when I have a library room again.
2. What is one of your favorite book that’s not in one of your favorite genres? Uhh… Bet Me I guess? Romance isn’t a big genre for me, but man I love that book.
3. What is the last 5 star book you read? I’m not sure… my spreadsheet isn’t in front of me right now to look at my recently read stuff. But off the top of my head, The Martian and The Lies of Locke Lamora. Neither of which were very recent, so I’m probably forgetting something glaringly obvious from this year, I’m sure.
4. What book are you most excited to read during the read-a-thon? Daredevil: Guardian Devil, hands down. I’ll probably read it tonight after work. I am so excited to start reading Daredevil.
5. What book do you recommend the most? Outlander, probably. I just love it so much.

WRAP-UP

  • 1342 pages read, most of which was comics
  • Plus about 11% of Marvel Comics: The Untold Story on audio
  • Favorite reads: RUNLOVEKILL #1 & #2, Kia and Gio, and Anyway: Angie
  • Least favorite reads: Daredevil: Guardian Devil by Kevin Smith and Joe Quesada. Disappointing intro to this character, but I’m looking forward to exploring other Daredevil titles
  • Took place in one awesome Twitter chat
  • Had a blast!

THE UPDATES – (I’m using a slightly modified version of the Bout of Books template)

Monday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 291
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: The Wicked & The Divine #1, Watson & Holmes volume 1, Brown Girl Dreaming, Ancillary Justice
#todayinsixwords: Tired, not really feeling it today.

I read a bit of Ancillary Justice at work and the first issue of The Wicked & The Divine, and by the time I got home I was just kind of tired and not really in the mood. I read the first volume of Watson and Holmes and a bit of Brown Girl Dreaming before calling it a night and watching The Big Bang Theory with the honeyman.

Monday

Monday

Tuesday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 73
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: Brown Girl Dreaming, Ancillary Justice
#todayinsixwords: I went into work late, because I had some things to go do in the morning, which means I was at work for only 5 hours and didn’t get to take a lunch. Then I had to go places after work too, and then I had dinner and then tried to figure out how to make baths in this apartment more enjoyable (damn near impossible), and then I fell asleep on the couch reading. All in all, not much reading time was had.

Tuesday

Wednesday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 216
Total number of books I’ve read: 4
Books I read from: The Wicked & The Divine #2, Brown Girl Dreaming
#todayinsixwords: Sarah got her groove back ya’ll.

Wednesday was a much better day. Work was fine, read on my lunch, came home and spent time with the honeyman, finished Brown Girl Dreaming, and then the Twitter chat! Ah, these Twitter chats. They’re so much fun, and I always find new bloggers to talk to 🙂

Wednesday

Thursday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 40
Total number of books I’ve read: 4
Books I read from: Ancillary Justice
#todayinsixwords: I just could not stay awake.

I don’t know what my problem was, but I was SO TIRED yesterday. I was falling asleep while reading on my lunch. Thursday nights are date nights, but we ended up ordering food, watching an episode of Sherlock, and I went to bed by 8 PM. I think I managed 5 pages on my Kindle before I passed out. Friday is always busy at work and it’s game night, so hopefully I get lots of reading in this weekend.

Thursday

Friday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 42
Total number of books: 4
Books I read from: Ancillary Justice, How to Be Black (on Oyster, this one happened kind of randomly)
#todayinsixwords: Busy work, game night, yada yada

Basically that – I read Ancillary Justice on my lunch. When I was at home I was just screwing around on Oyster and found How to Be Black by Baratunde Thurston – I ended up reading the intro and first chapter mostly out loud to the honeyman, cracking up at most of it, while we were waiting for our friends to arrive for game night. The rest of the night was spent playing this card/board game called Geek Out. It turns out I can list 11 X-Men characters (not too impressive), but almost failed at naming 4 cities in comic books. I remembered SO many after the fact. It’s a fun game though.

Friday

Friday

Saturday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 60
Total number of books I’ve read: 4
Books I read from: Ancillary Justice
#todayinsixwords: Ran lotsa errands with my nephew.

Oh good lord. I got up and went grocery shopping. Picked my nephew up at 10 (so my mom could go do things she had to do), and between 10 and 12:30 we went to the post office, library, bank, comic book store, and pet store. Those 2 1/2 exhausting hours with my nephew led to me going home and taking a 3-hour nap – and then an hour later, my older sis came over with her kids, and when the honeyman got home from drill we all went out to eat. Phew. Sunday will be my day though! I only have to do laundry, and throw some chicken in the crockpot later for chicken tacos (a must for readathoning). My Kindles are charged, I have a huge stack of other books and comics waiting for me. I’m ready.

Saturday

Saturday

Sunday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 279
Total number of books I’ve read: 5
Books I read from: Ancillary Justice, Deadpool Classic volume 2
#todayinsixwords: Finished Ancillary Justice, took some naps

Sunday

Alright, let’s do this thang!

WRAP-UP

Total pages read: 1001! Way better than what I was aiming for.

Books finished: Ancillary Justice, Brown Girl Dreaming, Watson & Holmes vol 1, The Wicked & The Divine #1 and #2

Books started but not finished: Undeniable by Bill Nye (well, this was started before the readathon and I listened to it some during the week, but didn’t log any pages or anything for it). I started Deadpool Classic volume 2 yesterday, and will continue to pick on that until I finish it later this week. And I started How to Be Black by Baratunde Thurston  – I had a different Oyster read picked out, but this one happened kind of by accident and I’m enjoy it so far.

Twitter chats joined: Only the one on Wednesday night, which was a blast. I forgot about the one on Saturday morning and I was already out running errands.

This was SO much fun, as always! The next Bout of Books 13 will be from May 11th to 17th, and I already can’t wait! Did you have fun this week? What was your favorite book read? Signing up for next time?

#Readathon – 4 hours in!

image

My reading helper. She is too cute, I can’t even.

Checking in! How is everyone doing?

So let’s see… so far I’ve read Horrostor by Grady Hendrix – only a little more than 200 pages, but still – first book complete. Yes!

Because I didn’t sleep well last night, I’m already feeling drowsy – despite the help of coffee and Dr. Pepper Ten. Already dipped into my little cup of Nutter Butter cookies too. Sooooo I’m going to spend a bit online blog hopping and tweeting, and then I’m running to the comic book store real quick to get my copy of Deadpool that came in. And then… who knows!

How are you guys doing?

image

Seriously Gabby, this is only making me want to sleep even more.

MY UPDATES – (I’m using a slightly modified version of the Bout of Books template)

Monday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 181
Total number of books I’ve read: 1, +1 comic book
Books I read from: Bad Feminist, Wraith issue #1
#todayinsixwords: Roxane Gay is my pretend BFF.

I expected to get a little more reading done than this, but between the Twitter chat and going out for coffee with my little brother and then eating dinner and watching an episode of The Big Bang Theory, I wasted like 5 or 6 hours not reading. Oh, and I commented on 15 new-to-me blogs! Yay! Not a bad day! Unfortunately, I have to work the rest of the week. Booooooo.

Monday

Tuesday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 119
Total number of books I’ve read: 1, +1 comic book
Books I read from: How to Tell Toledo From the Night Sky
#todayinsixwords: Shocked I read 100 pages today.

So, back to work. I read some on my lunch, and more when I got home… and then I meant to read more of my book or a comic, but I got pretty tired. I managed to visit 11 new-to-me blogs, but wasn’t as active on Twitter or anything as I would like. Not sure that will change for Wednesday – I’m looking at a 12-hour work day, so we’ll see how it goes.

Tuesday

Wednesday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 99
Total number of books I’ve read: 1, + 5 comic books
Books I read from: How to Tell Toledo From the Night Sky, Rat Queens #4 – 7
#todayinsixwords: Not too shabby, fun Twitter chat

I got out of work earlier than I thought I would, so I got some extra reading time at home. Caught up on my Rat Queens comics (YOU GUYS, THEY’RE SO GOOD), and then hopped online for what was a wonderful Twitter chat. Thursdays are date night, so my page count won’t be very high, but that’s okay, because I like hanging out with the honeyman 🙂

Wednesday

Wednesday

Thursday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 12, ouch.
Total number of books I’ve read: 1, + 5 comic books
Books I read from: How to Tell Toledo From the Night Sky
#todayinsixwords: Oh well, it was date night.

So I was super distracted when I was on my lunch (damn you Twitter and such) and then after work it was date night (which was ordering pizza and playing the crap out of Borderlands 2 together). So yeah, no reading after work, but time with the honeyman is more important 🙂

Thursday

Thursday

Friday
Number of pages I’ve read today: Whatever 15% of The Assassin’s Curse by Cassandra Rose Clarke is.
Total number of books I’ve read: 1, + 5 comics
Books I read from: The Assassin’s Curse
#todayinsixwords: Ridiculously busy work, and game night.

So work was insane, and I started reading The Assassin’s Curse on my Kindle during my lunch break. But after working 11 hours, it was also game night which meant hanging out and chatting with friends… so yeah, no reading time. This weekend shall be FULL of reading though!

File:Ouat shrug.gif

Friday

Saturday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 265, + 7% of The Assassin’s Curse on my Kindle.
Total number of books I’ve read: 3, + 7 comic books
Books I read from: The Assassin’s Curse, How to Tell Toledo From the Night Sky, Every Day Is For the Thief, Ms. Marvel issue #7, The Fade Out issue # 1
#todayinsixwords: Comic book store trip! So happy.

So I ran errands in the morning, including a trip to the comic book store to get a bunch of new stuff that I’m really psyched about. I came home and read, took a nap, read some more, then went to dinner with my older sis, and we came back to my house and read some more! Great day. For Sunday, I’m hoping to write a bunch of reviews and posts, read a few of the comics I have on my original list, and then just read whatever else I can.

Saturday

Saturday

Sunday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 37% of The Assassin’s Curse
Total number of books I’ve read: 3, + 7 comic books
Books I read from: The Assassin’s Curse
#todayinsixwords: Got restless, went to the movies.

So on Sunday, I was all set to blog and read all day… but by 4 in the afternoon, I was feeling kind of restless. I ended up playing Borderlands 2 for a while and then going to see Guardians of the Galaxy with my brother, since he hadn’t seen it yet and I wanted to see it again.

WRAP IT UP

 – 676 pages read

– plus 7 comic books

– plus 59% of The Assassin’s Curse

– 2 Twitter chats

– started off strong commenting, but fell off there near the end… week got busy 😦

Overall, I’d say this was a pretty successful readathon! I had a lot of fun, found some new bloggers to follow – all in all, it was lovely. January seems too far away for the next one!!

Bout of Books Readathon 8.0 MASTER POST

bout of books

It’s time, ya’ll! Time for Bout of Books!

haaay

In case you forgot, here’s the official Bout of Books blurb again:

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 19th and runs through Sunday, August 25th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 8.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

I’m hosting one of the challenges today (Monday)! Check it out here, you could win a $15 gift card or book! (Challenge is closed now.)

So let’s get to it! This is going to be where I update my progress daily – it’s a sticky post, so it’ll be here at the top of my blog page all week. I don’t like overrunning people’s readers with readathon posts, so just check back here for my updates (I’ll tweet it whenever I update it too). Moving on…

I am so, so excited for the books I have picked out. I think it’s a really good mix, and two of them I just bought on Saturday and I’ve been itching to start them!

Once again, here’s the official blurb from the Bout of Books team about what exactly this readathon is all about:

BoB 7 blurb

Sounds awesome, right? Cause it is.

So this here is my goal and updates post. I’m going to make it a sticky post so it’ll be at the top of my blog all week. I don’t like over-running your readers with daily posts like this (especially since reviews and whatnot will still go up), so just check back here for my updates 🙂 So, let’s move on to the goals!

pile of books

Obviously I probably won’t be finishing all of these, but I like to have options.

  • The Professor and the Madman by Simon Winchester
  • Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me by Chelsea’s family, friends, and other victims

  • Finish The Professor and the Madman, which I’m about 1/4 of the way through.
  • Cross at least 4 books off of my list.
  • Visit and comment on other blogs, new-to-me and not, at least once a day.

READATHON WRAP-UP!

I had a FANTASTIC time! I read 5 books, at 1683 pages! I’d have to double-check, but that might be the most I’ve ever read during Bout of Books!

I also got to participate in the Twitter chat on Wednesday (I think it was Wednesday…) and it was so much fun! Definitely found some new blogs to follow and met some really nice bloggers 🙂

Can’t wait till August!

~Sarah

Readathon! THE END.

Woooooo, it’s the end of the readathon! Which was so fun and awesome, and I’m already looking forward to whenever in October the next one is.

Thank you SO SO MUCH to the organizers, challenge hosts, prize donors, cheerleaders, and everyone else who makes Dewey’s readathon such a big deal!

End-of-Event Meme

  1. Which hour was most daunting for you? Ummm hours 18 through 22 were pretty rough. I was still really tired and couldn’t focus on my book, so I spent a lot of time online, visiting blogs and clearing out my Bloglovin reader.
  2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? Sure! Holes by Louis Sachar was really good, if you’re okay with reading kids books! Also any Harry Potter is a good pick too, or any other really interesting YA.
  3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? I don’t think so! It worked pretty darn well, I think.
  4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? The challenges were SUPER fun this time around! I don’t usually participate in that many, but I really enjoyed a lot of them.
  5. How many books did you read? Finished 2 and started a 3rd.
  6. What were the names of the books you read? The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, Holes by Louis Sachar, and I started Something Rotten by Jasper Fforde. Soooo… 477 pages total, which isn’t much but I’m still okay with it.
  7. Which book did you enjoy most? Probably The Song of Achilles.
  8. Which did you enjoy least? I liked all of them, but I think Something Rotten wasn’t the best pick for my last book. I forgot how much focus you kind of need to read the Thursday Next books and my muddled brain was just not up to the task.
  9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders? I wasn’t a cheerleader this year, but I think the cheerleaders did a FAB job!
  10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? OF COURSE I’ll be participating again! And most likely just as a reader, but depending on how busy life is at that time, mayyyybe as a cheerleader or challenge hostess.

So yeah, I had so much fun! I’m slightly regretting ALL THE SNACKS yesterday, so today will be a light food day. I still feel so full from dinner 12 hours ago.

Aaaand now I have 6 hours left of work, and guess what I’m gonna do? Read and blog some more! Catch ya’ll later.

~Sarah

Readathon! Half-way point!

IT Crowd clapping

Holy moly, we made it half-way! How the time flies when you’re having fun!

So updates, yes?

  • Finished Holes
  • Started Something Rotten by Jasper Fforde
  • Read 149 more pages, which puts me at 431 pages so far today.
  • Ate SO MANY jalapeno poppers. SO MANY.
  • Went for a walk around the neighborhood with the honeyman.
  • Took a bath in which I read and drank wine, which was super awesome.

Sadly, didn’t get the chance to join in on any challenges during the last few hours.

So, now I’m about to eat a chicken taco and visit some blogs. Then I should probably go to bed and get some sleep, cause I have to get back up at midnight-ish to go back into work. I’ll get hardly any reading done during the next 6 hours, but once I’m at work I’ll have the last 6 hours to read LOTS. But yeah, I need to get some rest for that plan to work.

SO GODDAMN CUTE

Read on, folks!

~Sarah

Readathon! 8 Hours In!

Me while readathoning.

Me while readathoning.

How are ya’ll doin???

So, we’re 8 hours in! 1/3 of the way over! Which is so sad to me.

Updates, yo:

  • Started Holes by Louis Sachar, read 104 pages of it before I left work
  • That’s 282 pages total so far, about half of my modest page goal for today!
  • Got home and started the chicken in the crockpot for chicken tacos later.
  • Ate some Nutter Butter cookies, and I’m going to make jalapeno poppers soon. YUMMMMMM.
  • Partook of the Self-Portrait Challenge, hosted by The Estella Society:

For the Hour 5 Challenge, Self-Portrait

  • The honeyman went out with a friend to an army supplies kinda store today and brought me back a present:

The honeyman, he gets me.

So yeah. Best day ever! I’m off to read a bit more, and chat a bit more, and eat sooooo many jalapeno poppers. I’ll be back in another 4 hours or so.
