our kitty Gabby

Sarah Sunday

Is there anything more sad than the end of a long weekend? (Obviously there is, but let me have my first-world-whine for the moment, okay?) But, it’s been a really nice four days off. I ate delicious good, decorated my tree and cleaned the house, read, and even went to the gym on Saturday JUST BECAUSE I FELT LIKE IT.

Reading: I’m 60% through Drums of Autumn. I’m on a VERY slow Outlander series re-read here, but in the name of relaxing I’ve been burying my nose in this and will probably finish it soon. I also read Let It Shine by Alyssa Cole this weekend, which was a great short Civil Rights Era romance novel written by Alyssa Cole. She is the actual best. And I’m still reading The Good Immigrant, I’m Judging You, and The Clancys of Queens. (Clearly I’ve gotten ahead of myself.)

Watching: A lot of Archer. I’ve been wanting to read more, so I watch short episodes of things with the honeyman. Man, season 2 was especially great, amirite?

Oh, and we also saw Doctor Strange on Saturday, and it was good. Nothing to get excited about, and I feel like it was missing something in terms of plot or character development, and I hate that they even threw in a tiny ridiculous romantic thing (and couldn’t get more creative with their casting than Rachel McAdams), but yeah. It was alright.

Listening: OMG you guys the Hamilton Mixtape is killing me in the greatest possible way. I love that the songs are coming out a couple at a time up until the actual release. Wrote My Way Out is AMAZING and Ja Rule and Ashanti perform Helpless together, and man it’s like my childhood hearing those two together again.

Eating: Well, pumpkin pie because I purposely bought an extra one just for home because I look forward to it all year and I’ll be damned if I’m gonna settle for one pathetic piece on actual Thanksgiving Day. And also spinach lasagna rolls, which are so yum and so much easier to make now that I have counter space.

Blogging: Well, hopefully that will pick up again. I’m done with this working a ton of hours bullshit, so that should help. I DO have family visiting this week though (well, Friday through Wednesday) so this week in particular will probably still be a bit quiet. I’m gonna try to at least get a November wrap-up post up.

Thinking: How my family is coming into town in like 4 days and I still need to buy them Christmas presents. Oy.

Anticipating: My family visiting! My little sister, her boyfriend, my nephew, and my mom are all coming in from NYC and my little brother MIGHT be coming from California (we’re not sure yet). It’s very exciting.

Hope you guys had a great holiday (or regular weekend, if you’re not in the US) and have an easy Monday!

Sarah Sunday

The honeyman is playing video games and I’m sitting here reading, blogging, and drinking coffee. It’s a good start to a Sunday! Also yesterday I successfully tackled the basement and living room and made major progress on unpacking, so that’s cool. There’s still boxes in the bedroom, but those are the husband’s to deal with, so.

Reading: The Girl With All the Gifts by M.R. Carey, which is super interesting and perfect with Halloween right around the corner. I’m also catching up on a bunch of comics, I read about a dozen last night and I have about 20 more in this stack.

Watching: Nothing really. I started re-watching Galavant yesterday, because of course I did. And we’re going to stay in tomorrow for Halloween and watch a scary movie of Treland’s choosing. Kinda hoping we get trick-or-treaters, but if not it’s cool because more candy for us 😉

Listening: Jidenna and Janelle Monae. Treland got that “Long Live the Chief” song that Jidenna performed on Luke Cage stuck in my head, so I downloaded a much of Jidenna and Janelle Monae songs this weekend.

Eating: I made chicken taco chili on Friday and it’s already gone! So probably pizza tonight.

Blogging: I’m trying to schedule a couple things in advance, since I’ll be travelling a bunch over the next two weeks. But also, I had these cute business cards made (see below) to bring with me to DC and NYC, just in case the occasion calls for it. I’m obsessed, they’re so adorable.

Thinking: About all the shit I have to do before leaving this week, and also I’ve never flown before so that’s starting to stress me out just a tiny bit… but less so than the thought of flying would have like a decade ago, so good job on growing up, me.

Also, about how I’ve been trying to grow out my hair this year and the dark blonde is about down to eye level now, and it is SO TEMPTING to just color it again before going anywhere, but then I’d have to start all over again… Stupid dumb hair.

Anticipating: Having a mini-vacation! And exploring DC a bit, and reading on the plane. It’s only like an hour and a half flight but I’m VERY excited about the chance to read while flying for some reason.

How has your weekend been?

Sarah Sunday

It’s Sunday morning and I’ve already finished a book and now working on blogging, and there’s so much more Sunday left! Usually it’s already 5 and I’m sad because the weekend is winding down.

Reading: I finished The Mothers by Brit Bennett today and it is as fantastic as everyone is saying. Believe the hype – go get it. I’m still reading Men We Reaped by Jesmyn Ward, and I’m thinking I’m going to try to squeeze Listen to Me by Hannah Pittard in today.

Watching: Still slowly making our way through Blacklist season 3 – my brother told me to get some wine or something to make it through the end because apparently some things go down. But also, watching the debates has been upsetting but weirdly fun because you just know some stupid shit is going to get said and Twitter is FABULOUS at live-tweeting and it’s just great. I’m almost sad that there’s only one left, but there should be plenty of comedic gold to come for it for a long time.

Listening: I haven’t started an audiobook in weeks, I can’t seem to land on one that I can focus on enough while I drive.

Eating: I cooked the rabbit! And it came out pretty good – it is a lot more flavorful than chicken, and I can’t wait to buy more and try different recipes. We gave Gabby a few pieces and she went NUTS, wouldn’t leave us or our plates alone afterwards.

Blogging: Dude, not nearly as much as I want to. I have some more reviews to work on, but I’m guessing that my posts are going to be a little more all over the place this fall. I’m taking two trips in early November, and then the holidays hit. But I’ll always be pretty active on twitter/instagram/litsy/snapchat at least.

Thinking: About how I REALLY should get around to finishing the unpacking downstairs at least. And also, holy hell Christmas is coming up way too fast.

Anticipating: The readathon next weekend! Bookish people unite!

How’s your weekend going?

Sarah Sunday

Is it just me, or has this been a pretty decent weekend? Feels like fall, so that’s nice.

Reading: I’m in the very beginning of both Men We Reaped by Jesmyn Ward (Social Justice Book Club pick!) and Fledgling by Octavia Butler. I hardly read this week – work has been an absolute bitch, I think I took lunch and actually left on time maybe 2 days out of the week – but hopefully that’s changing and I can finish both by next weekend.

Watching: Umm, we watched Keanu last night and it was ridiculous. Not enough of the kitty in it, but basically I would do all of those things to get my Gabby back.

Image result for keanu movie

Listening: The Heavy right now, but also Cannibal by Kesha. It’s a great Halloween-time song. She talks about eating boys and drinking their blood, so.

Eating: I bought a rabbit! I finally went to a meat market where they had frozen whole rabbits for sale. So, I have a 2-lb frozen rabbit in my freeze, and I’m really excited to try it, but I’ve never made rabbit before so any suggestions??

Blogging: I’m VERY BEHIND. Hoping to catch up a bit on reviews today.

Thinking: My new skull scarf that I got for $3 at the public market is awesome.

Anticipating: My friend is having a girl’s night next weekend, so that should be fun. And the weekend after that is the 24-hour readathon! Lots of shenanigans to look forward to. I could use about 20 readathons to catch up on all the reading I want to do.

Hope you’re enjoying your weekends!

Sarah Sunday

You guys, this week was just a big ball of SUCK. Work sucked, I found out the honeyman will be away for our big 10-year anniversary next summer, the washer is leaking when it’s not used for a day or two, and then I got sick. UGH.

Reading: You Can’t Touch My Hair by Phoebe Robinson, and Burn Baby Burn by Meg Medina. Because I was so goddamn busy I didn’t really get to participate in the #DiverseAThon like I wanted to, but this is what I was reading when I did get a few minutes and could focus.

Watching: I watched a lot of Cougar Town (season 1) this week. It’s my go-to comfort show.

Image result for cougar town hot as balls

Listening: To some old Eminem. I don’t know why, I stumbled on some random stuff in Prime playlists.

Eating: Saltine crackers! I pull out the classics when I’m sick – crackers and canned chicken noodle soup.

Blogging: I got some reviews up this past week, and hopefully I’ll have more this week (and time to post them). But on a related note, I’m on Litsy now!! I’m one of the beta testers for the Android version, and I’m SO EXCITED. Come find me!  (SarahSaysRead of course) I’m loving having a book-centric social media app.

Thinking: About how I did manage to get up early twice this week to work out (to try to get some stress relief) and I’d like to do that more this week. Having colorful leggings totally makes it more exciting, so I just ordered some more.

Anticipating: Family coming to visit. I don’t know when, but I really really want my brother and mom and sister and nephew to come visit – maybe around the holidays, but hopefully sooner. I have more room in the new apartment, so I want visitors! Also, I need to buy a planner because I ordered some AWESOME fun stickers from Wrecking Ball Designs and I can’t wait to use them! Any one have good planner recommendations?

Alright, I’m going to go read now. I basically slept on and off for 12 hours yesterday, so I’m feeling better enough today to actually read and if I try really hard, maybe I can even finish a book today. How’s your weekend going?

Sarah Sunday

Happy Sunday there, folks. I packed and moved furniture and boxes around a LOT yesterday, so today is going to be mostly about relaxing.

Reading: I finished Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova, and I started reading The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. I’m a little annoyed at Oprah getting the release date for it, because I had an e-galley and was about to start reading it to prep for next month’s release. Anyways, I started the e-galley and it’s so good I went and bought the hardcover yesterday, so.

Watching: Yeah, we watched Stranger Things in it’s entirety this weekend. Damn, Netflix is good. And I know everyone kept going on about Winona Ryder being in it, but I’m pretty sure Dustin was the star of that show. OMG that kid.

If I have a kid in some parallel universe, I hope he’s like Dustin. LOLs forever.

Listening: Podcasts mostly. And I tried The Partly Cloudy Patriot on Audible, but I had to return it – Sarah Vowell narrates herself for the most part and it was a bit rough to listen to. And her books seem PERFECT for audio, so that was disappointing. SO instead I got Playing Dead: A Journey Through the World of Death Fraud by Elizabeth Greenwood on Audible, and I admit that my decision was based like 95% on the fact that Mindy Kaling Instagrammed about it. (The other 5% was me listening to the sample and deciding that I could handle the narration.) Excited to start it.

Eating: The honeyman is making me breakfast sliders right now.  🙂

Blogging: HA. My blogging is all over the place – I can’t get on a set schedule with work being so crazy busy that sometimes I stay late and then trying to deal with packing stuff at home. But I’m not abandoning my blog so I guess that’s all that matters right now.

Thinking: About those sliders. And how I should go to the gym, but I think staying inside and reading and doing laundry sounds a lot better.

Anticipating: Book Riot Live! I think I’m going to buy tickets this week, and trying to get my sister to go with. Anyone reading this gonna be there? It’ll be the first time in all my years of blogging that I’ll be able to go to a big bookish thing and meet people IRL!

For reals, let me know. Now how is your weekend shaping up?

Sarah Sunday

Good morning, early birds (if you count 8 AM on a Sunday early, which I kinda do.)

Reading: Keeping on with re-reading Voyager for my Outlander re-reads. I’m like 40% in, hoping I can finish this week before I go to NYC for the weekend. Man I love this series. And I have The Gene on audio to start… but likewise, I’m wondering if I really want to start this before I go to NYC next weekend, when I know I won’t have any time to listen to it. My sister damn sure isn’t going to listen to it while driving.

Watching: I haven’t had time to watch a damn thing this week, except for a couple episodes of The Boondocks with the honeyman the other night.

Listening: Not a thing. It’s quiet right now, and after having my mom and nephew over most of the week, it’s kinda nice.

Eating: I’m hard-boiling some eggs right now because they expire tomorrow… we really gotta go grocery shopping today.

Blogging: Between my family being in town, work being busy because some people were on vacation, and apartment-hunting – I’m honestly kind of impressed I managed to get three posts up. I’m hoping to use this morning to get some reviews scheduled so I’ll be back on track for that, but things will probably be a little slow during the next couple weeks since I’m re-reading Voyager. But that’s okay. It’s summer, it’s the perfect lazy time of year to be relaxed about those things.

Thinking: About how I really do want to get some reviews written, but Borderlands 2 is calling my name.

Anticipating: Going to see my sister next weekend! My big sister and I are driving to NYC to see my little sister, and there will be NO KIDS. I am so looking forward to this.

How has your weekend been?

Sarah Sunday

(Not actually posted on Sunday, because I ended up pretty busy do aunt things.) Happy Fourth of July! Raise a glass to freedom at some point today. Or just listen to Hamilton, because why not.

Reading: Voyager – continuing on with my Outlander series re-read. And I’m almost done listening to Being Jazz,  a memoir by a transgender teen who is apparently quite famous but who I haven’t heard of before stumbling upon her book.

Watching: I went with my sister and all the niece/nephews to see Finding Dory yesterday. Baby Dory is pretty cute but otherwise – meh.

Listening: To The Emperor’s New Groove (niece and nephew slept over last night, they’re watching that now.)

Eating: Ugh, I feel like I’ve eaten nothing but crap over the past several days. I could really go for a big salad.

Blogging: I have a June recap to finish and get up this week, and a couple reviews to write. My review of Heroine Complex went up this week and I’m excited about that, because it was such a great book. It comes out tomorrow.

Thinking: About how if I was a mom, I would totally hide from my kid. I would be Ellie Torres.

I’m plotting how I  can squeeze an hour alone to myself somewhere in today. My nephew has been here since Saturday morning and I love him, but I need Sarah time with zero people or kids around.

Anticipating: Hopefully relaxing this week. Playing Borderlands (my gunzerker is a level 72 now, woohoo), starting Preacher, reading. Work is going to be annoyingly busy, so hopefully the nights will be chill.

How was your weekend?

Sarah Sunday

Hey kittens! This weekend turned out to be a LOT more laid back than I thought it was going to be, which is awesome because I needed it. How bout you?

Reading: Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLean. And also The Fire This Time (anthology put together by Jesmyn Ward), which I’ve been dipping in and out of for a while now, and technically The Fifth Season which I started but stopped around 12% because I was distracted by other things. Not sure if I’m going to pick that back up or save it for a future day.

Watching: A lot of Archer. I think want to start watching Jane the Virgin soon – has any one seen it? Is it good?

Listening: I listened to that “Wobble” song earlier in the car. Technically, that’s the first dance the honeyman and I have ever danced to, and it was at our wedding reception. LOL.

Eating: I have chicken marinating in rosemary balsamic stuff to make soon. YUM. Also on Habitica, “eat one vegetable” and “eat one fruit” are on my dailies list and I realized I eat a LOT less fruit than I would’ve thought. I win at vegetables though.

Blogging: I have to write reviews for In the Country We Love, and Homegoing. No clue how I’m even going to attempt Homegoing, I could basically just write “it was so great, just shut up and go read it” and that about sums it  up. Also, if you enjoy tote bags, go leave a comment on this post by Wednesday to win a Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children one. You can write on it!

Thinking: About how damn busy it was at work last week. I’m hoping it’ll be a bit more calm this week, cause damn.

Anticipating: Playing more Borderlands. We finally have a PS4 so we can play again (PS3 stopped reading discs a while ago).  Also, we’re not moving to NYC this year but our lease on this apartment is up in two months, so we’re gonna move to a better one in the area and I’m really excited to start looking. We’ve been in our current place for about 3 years and I’ve kinda sorta grown to hate it. It’s small, I hate being on the bottom floor, and I miss having enough hot water to take baths.

Any one have anything exciting coming up?

Sarah Sunday

(Up a bit late, because my mom is in town and I spent most of Sunday with family.)

Reading: The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin – I’m having a little trouble sinking into it because there’s a lot of new words and world-building stuff happening (and I’m reading it digitally, so can’t just go flipping to the Glossary easily) but I’m 10% in so I think I’ll stick with it. I read the first chapters of like three other books but I guess I just didn’t really know what I feel like reading.

Oh, and I’m reading the Jessica Jones: Alias series and it is fantastic so far. I’m on volume 3.

Watching: A crap ton of Cougar Town, because it’s so fluffy and great.

Listening: Hamilton. The Tony Awards performances were just fantastic. I loved that they performed without the muskets, and Miranda’s acceptance speech sonnet…

Eating: I had the most awesome soft-serve vanilla ice cream with rainbow sprinkles and it was SO TASTY.

Blogging: I have some posts to work on. I finished Being Mortal by Atul Gawande last week, but I don’t think I’m going to be able to review it. My feelings about my grandma’s death are too tied up in it. But just so you know – it was great.

Thinking: About the horrible massacre at the gay club in Orlando, and about how our country needs to deal with its gun problem, but also its hatred problem. I am so sick of hearing about a man deciding to up and murder women, black citizens, gay citizens, Muslim citizens, trans citizens, poor citizens, and on and on and on. Hatred should not have the right to exist. To the LGBTQ community – you have my ongoing love and support.

Anticipating: The honeyman will be home from drill this week and I cannot wait.
