It’s Bout of Books time! Bout of Books is a week-long, no-pressure readathon internet party and you can still sign up here. This is going to be a sticky post where I update everyday, plus I’ll be all over Twitter, Instagram, Litsy, and Snapchat – SarahSaysRead is my user name on everything.

I have today off (woohoo, thank you New Year’s Day!) and the honeyman will be kind of busy this week, so I expect a ton of reading time except for maybe on Sunday, because that’s our first wedding anniversary and I might want to spend time with my husband instead of reading. I mean, I guess. 😉

THE BOOKS

  • Turbulence by Samit Basu
  • Hope in the Dark by Rebecca Solnit
  • All Our Wrong Todays by Elan Mastai
  • The Feminist Utopia Project by Alexandra Brodsky and Rachel Kauder Nalebuff
  • Freedom is a Constant Struggle by Angela Y. Davis
  • Ultimate Comics Spider-Man – Volume 4 by Brian Michael Bendis and Sarah Pichelli
  • Fables – Volume 12 by Bill Willingham and Mark Buckingham

THE GOALS

  • Finish at least 3 books
  • Read at least 5 essays/chapters from The Feminist Utopia Project
  • Join in on at least 1 Twitter chat
  • Socialize on social media a bunch
  • Do at least one mini-challenge
  • Have fun!

THE UPDATES – (I’m using a slightly modified version of the Bout of Books template)

Monday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 70
Total number of books I’ve read: 0
Books I read from: Hope in the Dark, and The Feminist Utopia Project
#todayinsixwords: Pathetic since I didn’t have work

Okay so I ended up taking a nap, plus once the honeyman got home I wanted to hang out with him because he’s extra busy for the next few days so we re-watched Captain America: Civil War (Cap is so annoying) and yeah. The Twitter chat was a blast though!

Tuesday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 132
Total number of books I’ve read: 1
Books I read from: Hope in the Dark, The Feminist Utopia Project, and Spider-Man Volume 4
#todayinsixwords: Struggling with Hope in the Dark

Didn’t get quite as much reading done as I wanted to, but it was an alright day I guess. I’m not loving Hope in the Dark as much as I was hoping (ha) to, and I think for Wednesday I’m gonna ignore that and sink into a novel instead.

Wednesday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 142
Total number of books I’ve read: 1
Books I read from: All Our Wrong Todays
#todayinsixwords: Got sucked into a good book.

I started the e-galley for this book coming out in February and I’m really enjoying it so far! On the down side, I hardly got any sleep last night so I bet I’m not going to get much reading done today.

Thursday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 242!
Total number of books I’ve read: 2

#todayinsixwords: Tired but super successful reading time.

So, I thought I wouldn’t be good for much reading on Thursday because I was exhausted. But when I got home I took a 2-hour nap, and then spent the rest of the night finishing All Our Wrong Todays! Awesome. So proud of myself.

Friday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 0
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: None 😦
#todayinsixwords: Way busier than I was expecting.

Friday was a really weird day (Taye Diggs started following me on Twitter, had to call the police at work because of a suspicious bag/package on our stoop), and work was so hectic that I didn’t even take a lunch. I thought I could squeeze a few pages in after work and before we went to our friends’ house for game night, but that didn’t happen either.

Saturday
Number of pages I’ve read today:55
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: Battle Hill Bolero by Daniel Jose Older (wasn’t in my original stack because it just came out on Tuesday, but yay!)
#todayinsixwords: I am the most sleepiest ever.

I took like three naps on Saturday, no clue why. Also I got the honeyman Playstation Plus for Christmas so we can play games online, and we finally sat down last night to play Black Ops 3.

Sunday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 93
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: Battle Hill Bolero
#todayinsixwords: Wedding anniversary, so I was busy.

The honeyman had drill earlier in the day which is when I read, but he got home early enough for us to go see Hidden Figures and then go out to dinner, and then we played more Black Ops 3 when we got home. So all around a pretty great 1 year wedding anniversary!

Sunday

Alright, so let’s wrap it up!

  • 2 books finished
  • 734 pages read
  • 1 awesome Twitter chat (pretty sure I was napping during the one on Saturday)

Not too bad! I wish I had been able to get a third book finished, but instead I ended up in the middle of both Battle Hill Bolero and Hope in the Dark. Ah well, it was a fun time anyways.

Thanks as always to the our lovely Bout of Books hosts and for everyone who participates! I had fun with you guys this week!

MONDAY MORNING FINAL THOUGHTS

Well, I ended at 346 pages – way way below my goal. Work was hectic so I didn’t take a reading lunch like I usually do, and I would get easily sucked into spending time with the husband at home. I thought I’d be a reading machine over the weekend, but that didn’t pan out either. I  ran some errands, played some Borderlands, and cooked and cleaned.

On the plus side, I did most of the challenges on the BoB blog, and joined both Twitter chats and the Twitter chats are ALWAYS a blast. Can’t wait for Bout of Books 17 in August!

~Sarah

Sarah Sunday

Happy Mother’s Day! If that’s a thing that you’re into!

Reading: Grunt by Mary Roach, and some comics.

Watching: We saw Captain America: Civil War last night! It was pretty good, but the more I see or read of Captain America the less I like him. #TeamIronMan

Listening: To Friends playing in the background.

Eating: I just had the biggest lunch at Los Gallos and it was SO GOOD but I think I’m probably good for the rest of the day.

Blogging: I have a review to write but it won’t be up till next week probably, and I think I have a Top Ten Tuesday post to get up. But yeah, yay, still doing the thing!

Thinking: About how my family will be in town in a week and a half! And how we’re all going to get matching tattoos and it should totally be an artichoke (ahem, HEATHER).

Anticipating: BOUT OF BOOKS starts tomorrow! I gotta work on my pile still. Yayyyyy!

Bathroom ceiling finally fixed!

How’s your weekend going?

May Monthly TBR

April was actually a pretty good month! I’m happy with the number of books and comics I was able to read. It’s a miracle. May might get busier near the end of the month for me, but I’m hoping #BoutofBooks will offset that for me. In fact, I’ll stick this in here now and consider it my sign-up post:

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 9th and runs through Sunday, May 15th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 16 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

You’re joining in, right? You really should. Scientifically proven to be good for your health. (No, I don’t have a link to the proof for that, just take my word for it.)

On to the May pile!

  • imageHalf of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – I’m trying to purge more books, and I didn’t want to put this in the “donate” pile until I get to read it. Time to re-focus on #ReadMyOwnDamnBooks!
  • 2 A.M. at the Cat’s Pajamas by Marie-Helene Bertino – Ditto above, and I know there’s a lot of love for this novel.
  • The Beautiful Struggle by Ta-Nehisi Coates – Reading his Black Panther run has me itching for more Coates writing.
  • What is Not Yours is Not Yours by Helen Oyeyemi -I’m hit-or-miss with short story collections, but I have a feeling Oyeyemi’s writing style will be perfect for it.
  • Maestra by L.S. Hinton – This is being compared to 50 Shades of Gray, but there’s no romance or messy emotions. The girl apparently kills some of the guys that she has sexy sexy times with? I don’t know, but I’m very curious.
  • The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern – Yet another super popular novel that I really need to read or just get off my shelf.
  • Being Mortal by Atul Gawande – I forgot I had this on Audible, so yeah. Diving in.
  • Grunt by Mary Roach – I was pretty excited to get approved for this one on NetGalley.

And there’s a few other e-books and galleys I’ll try to get to if I can, AND Joe Hill has a new novel coming out soon that I’m going to get my greedy little hands on… but leaving the list kind of short worked well for me last month, so I’ll stop here. What are you looking forward to this month?

~Sarah

Monday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 217
Total number of books I’ve read: 0
Books I read from: The Book of Unknown Americans
#todayinsixwords: Twitter chats are the literal best.

I read 75% of my book, and took part in the Twitter chat (with wine, thanks to the honeyman). It was preeeeety awesome.

Monday

Tuesday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 205
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, The Book of Unknown Americans
#todayinsixwords: Cranky tired miserable grumpy people-hater

Maybe it’s because I finished The Book of Unknown Americans on my lunch and it was super depressing, but I was in a funk the rest of the day. Ugh.

Tuesday

Wednesday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 52
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: The New Jim Crow, Princeless Vol 2, #2
#todayinsixwords: Didn’t really read, too much outrage.

When we sat down to eat, honeyman and I got into a discussion about politics and how Trump is basically running a campaign based on racism. And then we spent the rest of the evening watching police terrorize a St. Louis neighborhood after they killed another young black male (live on Periscope). So yeah, didn’t get much reading done last night.

Wednesday

Thursday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 33
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: The New Jim Crow
#todayinsixwords: Really good thirty-three pages though.

Read on lunch a bit, and at night before bed. But Thursdays are date night so we had dinner and played some Borderlands 2 (we really need to start actually going OUT for date night, lol).

Thursday

Friday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 14. Ugh.
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: The New Jim Crow
#todayinsixwords: Day did not go as expected.

I worked from home – theoretically, I should have had extra reading time since I didn’t have to commute and all that. But I started working earlier than I normally would, it got busy during the day, and then right at the end of the day (when I should have been signing off so I could read for a couple hours before game night) a manager had a crisis and needed something so I ended up having to go into the office anyways to get that taken care of. Blerg.

Friday

Saturday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 17.
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: The New Jim Crow
#todayinsixwords: I didn’t get nearly enough sleep.

We didn’t get home from game night until 4:30 am. And then I got up at 10 or so, showered, went to run errands – and got saddled with my nephew for the night. Goddamn it.

CHALLENGES

Bookish Survey challenge, hosted by Writing My Own Fairy Tale

1. How do you organize your shelves? They’re kind of spread out, but I have a whole bookshelf of just favorites and comics, and then classics, non-fiction, romance, poetry, general fiction, and then other shelves that are just series or all mass markets, etc. It’ll be more organized when I have a library room again.
2. What is one of your favorite book that’s not in one of your favorite genres? Uhh… Bet Me I guess? Romance isn’t a big genre for me, but man I love that book.
3. What is the last 5 star book you read? I’m not sure… my spreadsheet isn’t in front of me right now to look at my recently read stuff. But off the top of my head, The Martian and The Lies of Locke Lamora. Neither of which were very recent, so I’m probably forgetting something glaringly obvious from this year, I’m sure.
4. What book are you most excited to read during the read-a-thon? Daredevil: Guardian Devil, hands down. I’ll probably read it tonight after work. I am so excited to start reading Daredevil.
5. What book do you recommend the most? Outlander, probably. I just love it so much.

WRAP-UP

  • 1342 pages read, most of which was comics
  • Plus about 11% of Marvel Comics: The Untold Story on audio
  • Favorite reads: RUNLOVEKILL #1 & #2, Kia and Gio, and Anyway: Angie
  • Least favorite reads: Daredevil: Guardian Devil by Kevin Smith and Joe Quesada. Disappointing intro to this character, but I’m looking forward to exploring other Daredevil titles
  • Took place in one awesome Twitter chat
  • Had a blast!

THE UPDATES – (I’m using a slightly modified version of the Bout of Books template)

Monday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 291
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: The Wicked & The Divine #1, Watson & Holmes volume 1, Brown Girl Dreaming, Ancillary Justice
#todayinsixwords: Tired, not really feeling it today.

I read a bit of Ancillary Justice at work and the first issue of The Wicked & The Divine, and by the time I got home I was just kind of tired and not really in the mood. I read the first volume of Watson and Holmes and a bit of Brown Girl Dreaming before calling it a night and watching The Big Bang Theory with the honeyman.

Monday

Monday

Tuesday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 73
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: Brown Girl Dreaming, Ancillary Justice
#todayinsixwords: I went into work late, because I had some things to go do in the morning, which means I was at work for only 5 hours and didn’t get to take a lunch. Then I had to go places after work too, and then I had dinner and then tried to figure out how to make baths in this apartment more enjoyable (damn near impossible), and then I fell asleep on the couch reading. All in all, not much reading time was had.

Tuesday

Wednesday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 216
Total number of books I’ve read: 4
Books I read from: The Wicked & The Divine #2, Brown Girl Dreaming
#todayinsixwords: Sarah got her groove back ya’ll.

Wednesday was a much better day. Work was fine, read on my lunch, came home and spent time with the honeyman, finished Brown Girl Dreaming, and then the Twitter chat! Ah, these Twitter chats. They’re so much fun, and I always find new bloggers to talk to 🙂

Wednesday

Thursday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 40
Total number of books I’ve read: 4
Books I read from: Ancillary Justice
#todayinsixwords: I just could not stay awake.

I don’t know what my problem was, but I was SO TIRED yesterday. I was falling asleep while reading on my lunch. Thursday nights are date nights, but we ended up ordering food, watching an episode of Sherlock, and I went to bed by 8 PM. I think I managed 5 pages on my Kindle before I passed out. Friday is always busy at work and it’s game night, so hopefully I get lots of reading in this weekend.

Thursday

Friday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 42
Total number of books: 4
Books I read from: Ancillary Justice, How to Be Black (on Oyster, this one happened kind of randomly)
#todayinsixwords: Busy work, game night, yada yada

Basically that – I read Ancillary Justice on my lunch. When I was at home I was just screwing around on Oyster and found How to Be Black by Baratunde Thurston – I ended up reading the intro and first chapter mostly out loud to the honeyman, cracking up at most of it, while we were waiting for our friends to arrive for game night. The rest of the night was spent playing this card/board game called Geek Out. It turns out I can list 11 X-Men characters (not too impressive), but almost failed at naming 4 cities in comic books. I remembered SO many after the fact. It’s a fun game though.

Friday

Friday

Saturday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 60
Total number of books I’ve read: 4
Books I read from: Ancillary Justice
#todayinsixwords: Ran lotsa errands with my nephew.

Oh good lord. I got up and went grocery shopping. Picked my nephew up at 10 (so my mom could go do things she had to do), and between 10 and 12:30 we went to the post office, library, bank, comic book store, and pet store. Those 2 1/2 exhausting hours with my nephew led to me going home and taking a 3-hour nap – and then an hour later, my older sis came over with her kids, and when the honeyman got home from drill we all went out to eat. Phew. Sunday will be my day though! I only have to do laundry, and throw some chicken in the crockpot later for chicken tacos (a must for readathoning). My Kindles are charged, I have a huge stack of other books and comics waiting for me. I’m ready.

Saturday

Saturday

Sunday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 279
Total number of books I’ve read: 5
Books I read from: Ancillary Justice, Deadpool Classic volume 2
#todayinsixwords: Finished Ancillary Justice, took some naps

Sunday

Alright, let’s do this thang!

WRAP-UP

Total pages read: 1001! Way better than what I was aiming for.

Books finished: Ancillary Justice, Brown Girl Dreaming, Watson & Holmes vol 1, The Wicked & The Divine #1 and #2

Books started but not finished: Undeniable by Bill Nye (well, this was started before the readathon and I listened to it some during the week, but didn’t log any pages or anything for it). I started Deadpool Classic volume 2 yesterday, and will continue to pick on that until I finish it later this week. And I started How to Be Black by Baratunde Thurston  – I had a different Oyster read picked out, but this one happened kind of by accident and I’m enjoy it so far.

Twitter chats joined: Only the one on Wednesday night, which was a blast. I forgot about the one on Saturday morning and I was already out running errands.

This was SO much fun, as always! The next Bout of Books 13 will be from May 11th to 17th, and I already can’t wait! Did you have fun this week? What was your favorite book read? Signing up for next time?

~Sarah

BOUT OF BOOKS READATHON 11.0 MASTER POST

Bout of Books 11.0 is finally here!

so excited

Bout of Books is a no-pressure, weeklong readathon, and it is the best. You can still sign up here. And if you have any questions, I’ve been dubbed a Bout of Books Expert (see the super official badge to the right), so feel free to ask in the comments or get at me on Twitter (@SarahSaysRead). I’ll be participating here with daily updates (this will be a sticky post, so it’ll be at the top post on my blog all week), on Instagram, and on Twitter. I have my books sorted out, my posts for the week ready, my jalapeno poppers (my must-have readathon snack) waiting in the freezer. I’m ready!

Let’s take a look at my possible reads this week.

MY UPDATES – (I’m using a slightly modified version of the Bout of Books template)

Monday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 181
Total number of books I’ve read: 1, +1 comic book
Books I read from: Bad Feminist, Wraith issue #1
#todayinsixwords: Roxane Gay is my pretend BFF.

I expected to get a little more reading done than this, but between the Twitter chat and going out for coffee with my little brother and then eating dinner and watching an episode of The Big Bang Theory, I wasted like 5 or 6 hours not reading. Oh, and I commented on 15 new-to-me blogs! Yay! Not a bad day! Unfortunately, I have to work the rest of the week. Booooooo.

Monday

Tuesday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 119
Total number of books I’ve read: 1, +1 comic book
Books I read from: How to Tell Toledo From the Night Sky
#todayinsixwords: Shocked I read 100 pages today.

So, back to work. I read some on my lunch, and more when I got home… and then I meant to read more of my book or a comic, but I got pretty tired. I managed to visit 11 new-to-me blogs, but wasn’t as active on Twitter or anything as I would like. Not sure that will change for Wednesday – I’m looking at a 12-hour work day, so we’ll see how it goes.

Tuesday

Wednesday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 99
Total number of books I’ve read: 1, + 5 comic books
Books I read from: How to Tell Toledo From the Night Sky, Rat Queens #4 – 7
#todayinsixwords: Not too shabby, fun Twitter chat

I got out of work earlier than I thought I would, so I got some extra reading time at home. Caught up on my Rat Queens comics (YOU GUYS, THEY’RE SO GOOD), and then hopped online for what was a wonderful Twitter chat. Thursdays are date night, so my page count won’t be very high, but that’s okay, because I like hanging out with the honeyman 🙂

Wednesday

Wednesday

Thursday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 12, ouch.
Total number of books I’ve read: 1, + 5 comic books
Books I read from: How to Tell Toledo From the Night Sky
#todayinsixwords: Oh well, it was date night.

So I was super distracted when I was on my lunch (damn you Twitter and such) and then after work it was date night (which was ordering pizza and playing the crap out of Borderlands 2 together). So yeah, no reading after work, but time with the honeyman is more important 🙂

Thursday

Thursday

Friday
Number of pages I’ve read today: Whatever 15% of The Assassin’s Curse by Cassandra Rose Clarke is.
Total number of books I’ve read: 1, + 5 comics
Books I read from: The Assassin’s Curse
#todayinsixwords: Ridiculously busy work, and game night.

So work was insane, and I started reading The Assassin’s Curse on my Kindle during my lunch break. But after working 11 hours, it was also game night which meant hanging out and chatting with friends… so yeah, no reading time. This weekend shall be FULL of reading though!

Saturday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 265, + 7% of The Assassin’s Curse on my Kindle.
Total number of books I’ve read: 3, + 7 comic books
Books I read from: The Assassin’s Curse, How to Tell Toledo From the Night Sky, Every Day Is For the Thief, Ms. Marvel issue #7, The Fade Out issue # 1
#todayinsixwords: Comic book store trip! So happy.

So I ran errands in the morning, including a trip to the comic book store to get a bunch of new stuff that I’m really psyched about. I came home and read, took a nap, read some more, then went to dinner with my older sis, and we came back to my house and read some more! Great day. For Sunday, I’m hoping to write a bunch of reviews and posts, read a few of the comics I have on my original list, and then just read whatever else I can.

Saturday

Saturday

Sunday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 37% of The Assassin’s Curse
Total number of books I’ve read: 3, + 7 comic books
Books I read from: The Assassin’s Curse
#todayinsixwords: Got restless, went to the movies.

So on Sunday, I was all set to blog and read all day… but by 4 in the afternoon, I was feeling kind of restless. I ended up playing Borderlands 2 for a while and then going to see Guardians of the Galaxy with my brother, since he hadn’t seen it yet and I wanted to see it again.

WRAP IT UP

 – 676 pages read

– plus 7 comic books

– plus 59% of The Assassin’s Curse

– 2 Twitter chats

– started off strong commenting, but fell off there near the end… week got busy 😦

Overall, I’d say this was a pretty successful readathon! I had a lot of fun, found some new bloggers to follow – all in all, it was lovely. January seems too far away for the next one!!
