Best Books I Read in 2014 (and some other stuff)

Happy New Year’s Eve! I’m relatively sure I won’t read a mind-blowingly awesome book in the next (less than) 24 hours, so we can finally talk about my favorites of 2014!

Well, here they are.

  1. Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
  2. Dataclysm by Christian Rudder
  3. Sad Robot Stories by Mason Johnson
  4. Smarter Than You Think by Clive Thompson
  5. An Astronaut’s Guide to Life by Chris Hadfield
  6. The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
  7. The Humans by Matt Haig
  8. The Martian by Andy Weir
  9. Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel
  10. Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay

Something noteworthy – 9 out of 10 were new-to-me authors! I read Beloved by Toni Morrison last year, I think, but everyone else was someone I hadn’t read previously.

How many books did you read in 2014?

Combined with comics that were in trade-format: 103. 66 books and/or graphic novels, and 37 volumes of comics (totaling to 233 issues of comics… holy crap! And I read a whole bunch of single issues that weren’t in this count.) Total pages read was less than 35,000. And I re-read both the Outlander series and most of theΒ Harry Potter series this year.

Did you accomplish your reading goals?

Not really, no. I would have preferred to have read 100 books PLUS a whole crap ton of comics, but ah well. Time was limited.

Worst reads of 2014?

Sex Criminals volume 1

Uganda Be Kidding Me by Chelsea Handler

How to Tell Toledo From the Night Sky by Lydia Netzer

Happily, I didn’t read many terrible books this year! These three were ones that I kinda wish I hadn’t wasted my time on.

Anyways, I’m not going to go through a whole survey thing this year, because I’m lazy. 2014 was a pretty decent year, reading wise, and I’m hoping for 2015 is even better. Ideally, I’ll hit 100 books plus a megaton of comics.

I hope everyone has a Happy New Year!!!

  1. I love this post – I may have to steal the format a little. I am feeling really lazy and not up to doing a big end of the year post, either!

You had a good year! That’s still a lot of books and comics. For your busy schedule, especially. I managed 75 books, which is more than my original goal. Not bad.

Happy New Year! Hope you have fun plans tonight!

  2. I still have to read The Martian and The Astronaut’s Guide. They’ve been both been on my list! You really did awesome this year even if you don’t agree. πŸ˜‰ Happy New Year to you, Treland, and Gabby!

  3. The Martian was my top book of 2014 until I read Stephen King’s 11/22.63 which pushed it into second place. I also really enjoyed the Chris Hadfield book, even if it didn’t make the top 10. Yay astronauts!

    1. I liked the concept of Sex Criminals, but after trying a couple issues past the first volume I realized I just really didn’t care about it. I ended up selling the first volume and next issues back to the comic shop.

  4. I had an excellent New Year’s Eve last night — made mulled wine, watched the most heartwarming movie about Britain (Pride) with some friends, and pretended it was midnight when actually it was only ten. And then I went to SLEEP. And it was GREAT. And today I am doing guacamole and ?steaks? and tequila shots with those of my friends who are willing to do tequila shots (very few cause most of them have had horrible tequila hangovers, but I never have so maybe this is my time).

    1. Tequila is WONDERFUL – But the first time I drank it, I did 8 shots and got sick all of the place… the hangover wasn’t so bad, but for a while there I couldn’t think of tequila or smell lemons without gagging just a tiny bit, lol. Sounds like you had a great new years! I stayed up past midnight, but by 1 or so I was falling asleep sitting up.

  5. That’s a GREAT year of reads Sarah! And woooo for the new to you authors! I didn’t count that in my list, but I reckon I probably would have ended up with a similar stat. Although a lot of the new to me authors ended up “authors who I read the entire body of work in 2014” authors haha.

    1. I’m really bad about seeking out an author’s backlist right away. I loved Americanah, and immediately put the author’s previous books on my to-read list… but haven’t gotten to them yet. Soon though!

  6. Such a great list! I read Station Eleven, Astronaut’s Guide and The Bluest Eye also last year, and want to get to Americanah, Smarter Than You Think, The Martian (need to finis this) and Bad Feminist this year.

    1. I can’t say enough good things about all of those. Americanah was fantastic, it was the kind of book I would read snippets outloud to the honeyman. Smarter Than You Think was SUPER interesting and refreshing. The Martian, clearly, is a great sci-fi space story and the main character is pretty hilarious. And Bad Feminist just really rocked my socks. I can’t wait to see what you think of them!!!
