Top Ten Tuesday: Some stuff I wanna do in 2014

the broke and the bookish

I wasn’t going to do any sort of resolutions or goals post for 2014, because I’m kind of lazy like that, and so I was going to skip this week’s Top Ten Tuesday. But I thought of some stuff, so here I am! Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely gals at The Broke and The Bookish, and this week’s topic is Top Ten Goals/Resolutions for 2014.

challenge accepted

1. Self-host – Yeah, I said that last year. But in order to get the best deal for self-hosting, which I want because I’m cheap, requires a bit more money at once. So come tax refund time, this will finally be happening. And along with self-hosting will come a different blog design, being an Amazon or The Book Depository affiliate,Β BookTubing more, and getting some cool contact cards for my blog via Printstagram.

2. Learn to make GIFs – Sometimes I know exactly what I want a GIF of, but can’t find it anywhere. And then I end up with a bunch of random GIFs saved that I never get around to using because I find ones that are great, but not exactly what I want at the moment.

Like this.

Like this.

3. Watch 52 movies – Yeah, I’ve been over this already.

4. Read a 100 pages a day – I’m already failing at this. But I have a cool new little planner that I’m kind of hoping to keep track of “pages per day” in.

5. Make a frittata – Maybe a version of The Pioneer Woman’s right here. Frittatas sounds like something I would LOVE, but I’ve never had or made one. Also I was going to put “make a shepherd’s pie” on this list too, but I did that on Sunday! What what.

6. Don’t gain weight back – Well this is a “duh” one. I want to stay within the 5 lb. range of where I am now.

7. Work up to 20 push-ups – So I lost some weight and cardio is kind of my jam, but I’m a bum when it comes to any kind of strength training. Also, I don’t like my upper arms. They’re squishy. Guess how many push-ups I can do? 1, maybe. So my thinking is do more push-ups, maybe my arms won’t be so squishy. It’s a good plan, kind of.

Keep On Trying

8. Get new glasses and/or contactsΒ – Again, something for tax time. Because even with insurance, glassesΒ and contacts are expensive. I don’t know if I can deal with putting contacts in, and I really love how I look in glasses, but it would be SO NICE to be able to buy and wear sunglasses this summer.

9. Buy new running shoes – My last aim for tax time money is to get myself some good new running shoes, because I need them desperately.

10. Do another run – Either the Color Run, or one of those zombie runs. It sounds SO fun, and will give me a little motivation to stick with running, and yeah. I did the Color Vibe Run last year and it was kind of fun, but also kind of sucked because it was freaking freezing and snowing -in late April. Hopefully that won’t happen again.

You know it looks awesome.

Alright, I’m back to working and reading and stuffs. What are you aiming to do this year?

  1. Yay for doing another run! I miss the days of 5 and 10Ks … I might have to try and work back up to one this year (or next year … no pressure). And 100 pages a day is totally doable, though I’m failing that, too. Ah well. As long as I’m reading SOMETHING I’m not beating myself up. Good luck with the self-hosting! I think about that all the time but think I’ll just stick with what I have … it’s just easier. I’m ALL about easier.

    1. You should sign up for a 5k! Although I imagine it’d be tough with a new baby, lol.

100 pages a day seems like such a modest goal, but it’s hard! I’m the same as you though – as long as I read at least a few pages, I feel better. I hate those days when I was so busy I somehow managed to not read anything at all.

  2. Good luck on all your goals! I’d also like to watch more movies and instead of push-ups, I’m trying to do pull-ups. My upper body used to be soooo weak and I’m working on strengthening it. Those runs look fun too. I’ve never been a runner but have always wanted to do something cool like that.

    1. Pull-ups are HARD. I can’t even do one. There’s an “assisted pull-up” machine at the gym that I really like and want to use more so I can work up to doing pull-ups on my own, but it’s like right in the middle of all the other weight machines so I feel awkward using it, lol. Stupid gym pressures.

The Color Run is fun and not timed, so it’s a good beginner 5K if you ever want to do it! You can walk the entire thing if you want, or run just part of it πŸ™‚

      1. I can’t do even one pull-up yet either. And we have one of those weird pull-up machines too…but it’s broken. So I just do it on a regular bar that’s attached to the squat machine. I pull up a stool and use that to stand on and support myself. It’s awkward sometimes but I’m determined to be able to do it!

  3. Great goals. I signed up for teh color run this year, which is huge, as I can’t even run across the street without gasping for air or dying of shin splints! Good luck on yours!

    1. Thanks! I think the reason I didn’t initially self-host when I came to WP is because I was worried I’d suddenly just stop blogging and I’d be wasting money… but it’s been like 4 years now, so I guess I’m in it for good! ;-p

    1. Well WP is a lot better than Blogger, IMHO, and I highly recommend starting off with self-hosted. I think it’s going to be a bit more difficult switching from free WP to self-hosted WP. But the limits, they are killing me! I can’t wait to switch.

  4. Haha, I feel your pain — I can only do one push up, too! And that’s a “girl” push up… Yeah…
I want to lose some weight this year, and start looking good for my boyfriend’s sister’s wedding mid-February, so I need to get back into cardio and strength training.
I’ve been toying with the idea of self-hosting but a) I’m poor and b) it’s intimidating. Maybe one day.
Great list and good luck! πŸ™‚

    1. Self-hosting IS a bit intimidating, but mainly because I’m not sure how the transfer of my domain name (which I already own) happens… I’m going to have to take a few days off of work to focus on it.

  5. I always say that I wouldn’t run unless I was being chased by zombies… Darn these race coordinators and their brilliance! I’ve been taking a pilates class (which is a misnomer because it’s more like just plain old exercise) but my instructor makes us do pushups. I can do quite a few pushups on the knees, but only about 5-10 full on military style pushups. That gif is cracking me up, because that’s how I look after pushup 5.

  6. Contacts aren’t that bad once you’re used to them πŸ™‚

I can do about 20 pushups on my knees, but only about 1 military style πŸ™‚

Great list! Hope you reach some of these goals!!

  7. Oh my god, that press-up GIF. I could watch it all day. The first rule of press-ups is surely that if you feel your arms giving way, DON’T PUT YOUR HEAD CLOSEST TO THE GROUND. Okay, just one more look… *chortles and eats another cookie*

I wouldn’t know where to start making GIFs, but I have a folder full of random stuff. Not that one though. I should probably save that. πŸ˜›

  8. Sarah, I can teach you how to make GIFs in Photoshop, but I’m sure there are other ways too. Good goals. Let’s do a Dirty Girl mud run together!

  9. 100 pages a day is fabulous! I read once about a book blogger who reads at least 50 pages of every book she’s reading per day. So if she’s reading 1 book, it’s 50+ pages. 2 books, it’s 50 pages per book so 100 books. I thought it was interesting. I like the 100 pages goal, though. Good luck on all of your goals!

    1. I try to aim for 100 pages of whatever I’m reading, whether it’s one book or three, but even fitting in 50 pages is hard sometimes! Yesterday the only time I had to read was on my lunch break, I think I got about 10 or 15 pages read. When I got home from work, I ate dinner and then spent the rest of the night working on writing some reviews. I just need more time in the day!

  10. I love your goals! I had a frittata the other day for the first time, and it was good! I want to make a quiche this year. They are YUMMY! This weekend, we are going to try a pot pie. I am really not into cooking, but I need to learn so I am taking baby steps and have cooked a few meals in the new house.

Oh, and I’m glad that you are going to self-host finally! It’s worth the move! πŸ˜€

    1. Mmmmm I should attempt a quiche. I had one when I got my wisdom teeth out and thought it was good. Of course, my memory might be a little off there, lol.

Yay for getting more into cooking! I hope you’re liking it. It’s fun to try new recipes.

  11. I’m so super terrible at making eye appointments every year and updating my glasses. I don’t know why I’m so lazy about this. My insurance covers the cost of everything but my contacts which is pretty good. I’ve recently switched back to mostly wearing contacts. I go through moods where I prefer one over the other, but it’s always nice to have both options.

And push-ups! I have never been able to do more than 10. EVER. Even when I was lifting on a fairly regular basis. I also can’t do pull-ups. But I can squat for days. My arms are just little weak sickly things.

Good luck with all of your goals! I wish I was less lazy because self-hosting would probably be amazing.

    1. I always worry that if I switch to contacts, then I’ll never wear my glasses. I want to be able to switch between both. The few times that I’ve got two pairs of glasses at once so that I can switch between, I always end up wearing one pair every day and the other either gets lost or I only wear if I need to for some reason. It’s weird.
