I only really recently discovered who Chelsea Handler was – she has the late-night talk show called Chelsea Lately. Unfortunately, I haven’t actually seen the show on tv, but I came across some clips on youtube and they were hysterical! So, I thought I’d see how her humor comes across in her books, and I borrows this one from the library.
This is essentially a mixed-up collection of humors stories from Chelsea’s life – her booming baby-sitting business when she was 12, her first DUI, a birthday party for a girl she hates, vacationing with her Dad, her weird obsession with midgets, etc. And of course, there were a TON of laugh-out-loud moments. I couldn’t stop giggling, and got through the book in about a day.
There was just something missing, but I’m not sure what it is. Maybe that because it’s such a balls-out vulgar kind of humor that it was missing a more personal side of Chelsea. Or it could just be that since I’ve seen her on tv, the book was just less exciting. Her voice and jokes really came across well in the book – it was almost like watching her on tv or doing stand-up comedy. But I think I prefer the on-tv, “in person” Chelsea to written Chelsea. I still think I might pick up one of her other books though, just because sometimes, you need some humor!
If you’re looking for a good laugh, this is a good book. And it might be a perfect gift for your friends who really need a pick-me-up – along with a bottle of vodka, of course!
